1968 Olympic 400 Meter Hurdles Champion
Hemery's crowning achievement was his gold medal and world record over 400 meter hurdles in Mexico City with a time of 48.13 seconds. He collected a bronze in the same event in 1972 as well as a 4x400 meter relay silver that same year. Hemery had first come to fame with a win in the 120 yard hurdles at the 1966 Commonwealth Games, he captured the title at 110 meters four years later in Kingston. Hemery won the silver medal in the 110 meter hurdles at the 1969 European Championships. Hemery was world ranked in the 400 meter hurdles just twice, first in 1968 and third in 1972. Hemery also ranked twice at the 110 meter hurdles, 8th in 1969 and 5th in 1970. In 1969 he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire. In 1998, he was elected as the first president of UK Athletics.
