1974 U.K. NATIONAL SUPERSTARS
The second British (or U.K. National) Superstars were held in the summer of 1974. Defending champion David Hemery faced six challengers for the title. Squash player Jonah Barrington and motorcyclist Phil Reed were unable to attend and boxer John H. Stracey was a last minute replacement. Hemery was suffering from a touch of the 'flu, while boxer John Conteh arrived in excellent condition. Conteh ran a close second to footballer Mick Channon in the 100 meters. Colin Bell had stumbled at the start and David Hemery was barred from his specialty. The weight lifting would prove to be the decisive event as Conteh out lifted Hemery by 7 1/2 kilograms to compensate for his lower body weight. There was some controversy concerning Chay Blyth's participation in the rowing event. He had once rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, but his area of specialty was sailing so he was allowed to participate in the rowing where he beat Hemery by less than a second.
