A doubles specialist, Riessen won the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles championship three times with Margaret Court-Smith and the Men's Doubles in 1976 with Tom Okker. He won the French Open doubles title with Arthur Ashe in 1971. Riessen won six singles and 53 doubles titles in the open era (post 1968). His best performances as a singles player in Grand Slam tournaments were reaching the quarterfinals in both the Australian and U.S. Opens in 1971.
