Simpson won the 1968 Heisman Trophy at U.S.C. and then joined the Buffalo Bills as the first pick in the 1969 N.F.L. draft. He led the N.F.L. in rushing for five straight seasons from 1972 to '76. His 2,003 yards in 1973 was a N.F.L. record at the time and the first man over 2,000 yards in a single season. Simpson was selected as N.F.L. Player of the Year in 1972 and '73. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers before the 1978 season and retired after the '79 season. His 11,236 lifetime rushing yards were second to Jim Brown at the time of his retirement. Simpson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. During and after his career, Simpson worked as a television commentator and actor in such films as The Towering Inferno, Capricorn One and The Naked Gun. In 1994, Simpson gained notoriety and infamy after being charged with the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman. His was acquitted following a lengthy, highly publicized trial; however, in 1997 Simpson was found liable for their deaths in a civil court. In September of 2007, Simpson was arrested in connection with a armed burglary of sports memorabilia at a hotel in Las Vegas. Simpson was found guilty of numerous felonies and sentenced to at least nine years in prison.
