1975 EUROPEAN HEAT 3 - DUTCH HEAT

The third of five European heats came to the Netherlands and the home country was represented the most experienced Superstars competitor in Europe. Triple Olympic speed skating champion Ard Schenk had participated in four events in America, winning a preliminary round in 1974. He was up against three auto racers, including one who also had American Superstars experience, Brit James Hunt. Also involved was the Swedish ice hockey player, Borje Salming, who was based North America with the Toronto Maple Leafs. What evolved was the closest Superstars competition to date. Belgian soccer player Jeff Jurion took the opening event, the 100 meters in a very close race where the first four all finished within one-tenth of a second. The other representative from the host nation, auto racer Gijs Van Lennep won the rowing. Neither of the first two event winners would figure in the final standings. Salming, even though lighter than Schenk lifted more weight to easily win the event. Schenk, as he always had in American, easily won the cycling over Formula One World Driving Champion, Emerson Fittipaldi from Brazil, who had also participated in Superstars in the U.S.A. Fittipaldi was representing Switzerland in these European Superstars, the only "Swiss" athlete in the European Superstars. A Wimbledon junior player, Hunt took the tennis event over Salming. German show jumper Hendrik Snoek won the shooting over Schenk to move into contention. Salming easily beat Snoek in the swimming, while Schenk won the soccer penalties over Hunt. Entering the 600 meter steeplechase, four athletes were in contention for the title; Salming 38; Schenk 37; Hunt 34, Snoek 31. Hunt took off at a quick early pace, but soon the rest reeled him in. At the first water jump, Snoek was in fourth place but he fell into the water hazard and cut his arm and hurt his ankle, unable to finish. Schenk went on and outdistanced Salming and Hunt to take the heat and qualify for the European final.
