During Maria's first night in the Von Trapp home, the Captain walks into Maria's bedroom as she and the children are singing. He is upset as the children are supposed to be in bed by then. Or is that his real reason for being upset? Remember that there is a long line of governesses who found their situation unbearable. Is there a secret side to the elegant and dashing Captain?

At the party, the Children ask Maria about the laendler. While she is trying to teach Kurt the dance, the Captain watches them. He then dances the fateful ländler with Maria. Why can't he control himself? During the dance, the Captain looks very strangely at Maria that she blushes.

After Maria returns from the abbey, the Captain realizes that he loves her. As he is watching Maria from a balcony, the Baroness, realizing that the Captain does not love her anymore, breaks off their engagement. Before she leaves, she says to the Captain, "Somewhere out there is a young lady who I think will never be a nun." The Captain acts extremely surprised and seems to do a double take. We ask, why does he bother pretending that he doesn't know what the Baroness is talking about?
