THE COUSINS "BINGE" FAMILY PAGE

Dry Drayton Church,Cambridgeshire

BINGE was the name of my 3x great grandmother, (Esther bap.1788) She is on my distaff side and so I really didn't try very hard to do much about her. I had managed to get back to her great grandparents, William BING and Francis PISFOOT (mar.1703/04) my 6x great grandparents, and felt very content with that. Some years later I had a letter from Australia asking for help(1996). To my delight I was able to help. Jenny McAuslan (Francis bap.1772)from Victoria,Australia..we shared gt x 4 grandparents. Then another letter, Sharyn Lunn (Edward bap.1773), Australia again. Once again I could help; Sharyn shared the same Gt x 4 grandparents. We were descended from Edward,Francis and Esther. More time went past, during which, I got involved with the Internet. Next to contact me, this time via email was Louise Jones, and as before she was descended from Edward bap.1773, same brother as Sharyn. From there it galloped to Elizabeth Thomson,New Zealand, via fax,she proved to be descended from Francis bap.1799 the youngest son. Then David Binge(at last a BINGE!) email this time, and descended from Allenbap.1778 another brother. David introduced me to John Guest, descended once again from Edward bap.1773.John is compiling a list of all BINGE folk in DRY DRAYTON,Cambs.

By this time I had rather a large file on the BINGE/BYNGE family and it was getting extremely interesting. There were a lot of cousins out there.

The "piece de resistance" was from our cousin Elizabeth. She has access to a computer but was just starting to take lessons. She was browsing and put in, simply "Edward Binge"...and what do you think came up?? ...Well I'll tell you.. the whole of the Binge? BYNG family tree back to 1477.... I was amazed when I saw it. I have since heard that the information was taken from Donald Chestnut's research(no problem with that..that's what it's all there for.)

I have to say at this point that I can't agree with the findings of this research further back than : Edward Binge who married Elizabeth at Swavesey on 26thJanuary 1662/3. At this point we cannot prove any earlier generations, and as hard as I try, no one seems to be forthcoming with proof.

After the euphoria of finding these ancestors, and trying to find out who was researching them, where did the information come from ?could I contact anyone..?it suddenly began to dawn on me that, as people, they didn't seem to exist. They were just names and dates in a huge database. Vague off-shoots of other families. All anyone wanted was "more dates..more names". I have always been more interested in Family History than Genealogy..so as far as the BINGE family is concerned, we "The Cousins Binge" will try to make the ancestors into people, with lives of their own, not just numbers and names in a database. The best way to do that is to ask the descendants, who are most interested, to give us their stories. That is what I hope this page will eventually do.

The following text is from David BINGE:

CAMBRIDGESHIRE RECORDS OFFICE SEARCHES.

THE EARLY BINGES

Query on birth of Edward, born c1750. His father Edward was born in 1705 and he married Alice Perkis on 9th December 1731

Issue with Alice in Dry Drayton original register:

Elizabeth c25.12.1732 Married John Creek
William c24.09.1734 Married Elizabeth Carter
Alice c29.08.1736 buried 17.5.1757
Sarah c19.09.1738 Married John Allen
No other christenings until

Frances c31.07.1743 Married Joseph Gaylor
Hester c06.01.1746 Married Smith Linton (Esther in will)
Alice was buried on 25th August 1746 in Dry Drayton
Edward married Mary Bentham ( formerly Mary Bignall, married to Isaac Bentham 2nd October 1742 and widowed in 1747) on 1st August 1749 at Haslingfield
- no Binge christenings in register. He presumably needed a new wife to look after the young children left by Alice.

Edward born to Mary Bentham about 1750 but not christened?
In his will, Edward (1705 -1771) said that he left a bed, etc to his wife Mary and 18 pence weekly, to be paid by his son Edward, his legatee.

Edward (born c 1750) married Mary Allen and had children from Edward 1773 to Francis 1799. This suggests that Mary, if about 45 in 1799, was born about 1752-4 but no suitable candidate has been found.

The earlier Binges, although the links are not proven, are thought to be:

Edward, born about 1640 (christening not yet found), Married to Elizabeth (no name in register, thought to be Elizabeth Picken chr Swavesey 26th December 1641) at Swavesey on 26th January in 1662 or 1663.

Issue - Elizabeth 1664, Edward 1667, Daniell 1670, Anne 1672,
William 1674,died 1675, Mary 1675, William 1678, John 1682.
William 1678 married Francis Pisford (born Frances Ringstead of Cottenham, widow of Henry Pisford) in Cottenham on 18th February 1705.

Issue Edward 1705 (note only 5months after the marriage) and Sarah 1707.

Provenance - This document is written by David Binge, a direct descendant of Edward of 1750 via his son Allen and now aged 70. The above is the result of several years work including visits to Cambridgeshire Record Office by myself and others descended from Edward of 1750. At the moment I and fellow Binge researchers, backed by paid researchers, can find no links between our Binges, who were blacksmiths and farmers with land tenure, and the academic Bing/Byng families of Clare College, Cambridge. They may have links with London and Kent, but Binge and its variants is a widespread name in Cambridgeshire and nearby counties such as Lincolnshire and Huntingdonshire.
