3 Methods To Move In: 1) use EZ Upload You can use the EZ Upload buttons to upload HTML files you have created on your computer. Be sure the page you want to be *the first page seen* is named
"index.html" (minus the quote marks) just like that! All lower case, .html, NOT .htm! Everyone's FIRST PAGE at GeoCities MUST be named
"index.html". You can also upload graphics to your files. Images can be in the form of pictures, icons, buttons, and backgrounds. There
are many free graphics places on the Internet, just get them, save them to your computer, and upload them to your files at Geo. Instructions on
how to save graphics to your computer: Right click (PC) or Click + Hold (Mac) over the image you want, and choose Note on putting graphics or HTML files in your files at GeoCities: The graphics don't all have to be gifs, you can use jpg's, too, and you're safe with those two. Bitmaps need to be converted to .jpg files because only approx 50% of browsers being used now can "see" bitmaps. So, if you use them, know that you should include text links somewhere on that page for those that can't see/use bitmaps. When you save graphics to your computer, you can upload them via EZ Upload in the File Manager. To Use EZ Upload: |
Find
the file you want, using your /\-up
folder arrow (# 3 above) to get to the correct folder inside your computer, click on the file name (html file or graphic file - see image below) to
hightlight it, and choose "open". That "loads" your file into the uploading box. You do have to upload EACH INDIVIDUAL FILE to Geocities, even if your html editor on your computer has an option to "keep images with file". The way uploading works, it does not automatically send each image with the html file it's used in. When you have all of the files you want to upload (or all the upload fields filled in) in the "Upload Files" box (see lower left corner of first image), just click on the "upload" button there, and those files will go into your files at Geo. Be patient! If Geo is very busy, you will wait a few minutes, and it will SEEM like "forever" to you. As long as your computer is "working" and there is feedback going back and forth between your computer and Geo, you're okay! You can do test ones, just to try uploading a graphic or two, and then if you want to delete them out of your files, you would click on - to check - the little white box to the left of the file name, scroll down, and choose "delete file" button. That will bring you to a screen that shows your files you selected and asks you "are you sure?" (just in case) and you click yes. The files are gone. If you look at the "Inside File Manager" page, you will see what those files and boxes next to them look like. 2) FTP your graphic and HTML files to GeoCities. If you are unable to upload graphics as explained above, or create a page on GeoCities Editors, your other alternative is to FTP your graphic and HTML files (that you have created on whatever editor you use) to GeoCities. WS_FTPLE95© is explained in my Tutorials section -- including photos of the set-up screens for the program. You can also FTP files by many editors now, for instructions, see above and/or Geo's page at: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/ Front Page© has some special problems in the way it operates vs. the way your files would be at GeoCities. I have also heard that Front Page© requires an addition plugin module to successfully publish pages/files to a non-frontpage supporting website (Geo does not support Front Page at this time). If that module is not installed, frontpage will error out on the attempt. Some websites, that explain thoroughly, the workings of Front Page© and web hosts (like Geocities) are: |
