Al received a package that I sent
addressed to "any soldier in Nam" in 1969.
Al and I wrote to each other while he was in Nam.
He was a wonderful person.
When he got out of Nam, he bought a Mustang
drove from New York to Lincoln, Illinois to meet me.
I can see his face like yesterday.
He left a special place in my heart.
For years, I have tried to locate Al both by mailings and online searches.
To my great sorrow, I located Al a month after his death.
I sobbed when I saw this obituary appear on my computer screen.
"Retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Alfred Rowe Clark Jr., 53,
died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Williamsburg Community Hospital.
Born in Yonkers, N.Y., to the late Alfred R. and Simone Newcomb Clark Sr.,
Mr. Clark had retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service.
He was a Vietnam veteran.
After his retirement, he had worked at the Naval Shipyard in Norfolk
and most recently for the Virginia Department of Transportation
as a maintenance mechanic on the Scotland-Jamestown Ferry.
Mr. Clark was an avid boater and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association."
I will NEVER forget this soldier and friend.
In God's hands: May 6, 2000 but tucked in my heart forever.
You touched my life and heart.
You remain so special Al.

On July 29, 1967 the USS Forrestal was operating on Yankee Station off the coast of North Vietnam. Most tragic was the loss to the crew, 134 had lost their lives, while an additional 64 were injured. It is one of the worst, if not the single worst accident onboard a ship in American Naval history. God give their families and loved ones peace. during a military training maneuver on base at Camp Pendleton, California
Most Americans are not aware that up to
1800 of our GI s die every year in
training accidents.
I sadly was one of the uninformed.
He had been in for
three years.
I worried myself sick while he was in Kuwait
and was so
relieved when he returned to American soil.
Three Marines at my door changed
that.
Ben was a third generation Marine.
