In Memoriam Mario Savio There comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part,
you can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies on the gears, and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus. And you've got to make it stop.

Dark Alliance Stories by Gary Webb - The San JoseThe Mercury News published a three-part series in late August that detailed how, for the better part of a decade, a San Francisco Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to the Crips and Bloods street gangs of Los Angeles and funneled millions in drug profits to a Latin American guerrilla army run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a Mercury News investigation has found. This drug network opened the first pipeline between Colombia's cocaine cartels and the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a city now known as the crack capital of the world.

Selections from the Senate Committee Report on Drugs, Law Enforcement and
Foreign Policy chaired by Senator John F. Kerry While the contra/drug question was not the primary focus of the investigation, the Subcommittee uncovered considerable evidence relating to the Contra network which substantiated many of the initial allegations laid out before the Committee in the Spring of 1986. On the basis of this evidence, it is clear that individuals who provided support for the Contras were involved in drug trafficking, the supply network of the Contras was used by drug trafficking organizations, and elements of the Contras themselves knowingly received financial and material assistance from drug traffickers. In each case, one or another agency of the U.S. government had information regarding the involvement either while it was occurring, or immediately thereafter.

- Political Speech Vs. Spam It's either a raw display of political impudence. Or it's yet another example of the murkiness of cyberspace, a place where sometimes it's impossible to tell who's doing what to whom.

Playing Dead from Postcards by Grover...
At the start of the Gulf War, protests were breaking out all over Ann Arbor. No surprise here... its a major University town. But we at the newspaper got a phone call tipping us off that a group of people were going to ''die'' in the Mall, and make a big scene in order to protest the whole war thing. I walked around the Mall, looking for them to ''die'' and suddenly, all the people around me just dropped to the floor. Some moaning loudly, some twitching, some just laying still. But the funny thing about it all
was that people continued to shop, and nobody paid much attention to it. I shot this picture of one of the ''dead people'', with the legs of people walking by in the background to try and illustrate the situation.

In Germany they first came for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me -- and by that time, no one was left to speak up.
-- Pastor Martin Niemoller
Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long to retain it.
