My Scotland Connection

ggrandfather

Aye, It's bonny bloodlines I have! Above, you see my Great-Grandfather Angus, born in Ontario,Canada. His Mother was a MacDougall whose parents immigrated from Knodart, Invernesshire. Perhaps the plaid he wears could be from his mothers family? Or perhaps from the Grandmother Mary McDonell on his fathers side? The pride in his Scots heritage shows -he is in his forties in this picture. Mary McDonell came from Knodart, Invernesshire, as well. It seems that the Scots came to Canada at this time to escape both economic conditions and religious persecution. My Uncles notes do not elaborate, but since this family was "always Catholic" according to my Grandfathers words, I would hazard a guess that the Highlander Catholics were the persecuted group in this case. But I don't really know. Their pastor was an Alexander McDonell and they sailed on the ship "McDonald". So you see my clan associations are the MacDougall and McDonell.

This is my Grandfather, a charming and handsome man, with a few of the faults that make for family stories. He was a merchant marine, and a number of other interesting things in his life, including well driller, farmhand, logger, and radio operator.
