Immortal
Beloved will be forever compared with Milos Foreman's Amadeus,
and both are beautiful movies in their own right. The film is set up similar to
Citizen Kane, in that Schindler (Beethoven's
confidante) tries to uncover a mystery regarding Beethoven's one true love, through
an inquiry which involves interviews and flashbacks. Gary Oldman (JFK,
The Professional) plays a man on the edge of madness
and does it very convincingly. The visual imagery is at times spectacular. An
example of this imagery occurs when a young Beethoven escapes from one of his
fathers drunken beatings and runs through a forest with "Ode to Joy" playing in
the background. The scene ends with him laying in a still pond with the night
stars reflected around him and as the camera pulls back...it's as if the boy is
floating in space. -Review by Aaron Caldwell
