Greater Farur (Forur) is situated 45 km from Bandare Lenge and 66 km from Abu Musâ island, in the Persian Gulf. This island is located between latitudes 26- 19' and 26- 15' N. and longitudes 54- 33' and 54- 29' E and is a part of Abu Mus â sub-province (one of six islands in Abu Musâ Island Group) and Hormozgán province in Iran. This island covers an area of 26.2 sq kms. The highest point on the island is 145m above the sea. This island is poor on precipitation. The average temperature is 18.0 C° (min. 10 C° at winter and max. 47 C° at the high summer). The island is mostly covered with rocks and dark volcanic hills, and its coastline consists of rocky cliffs some 35 feet high. In the light of day, the mariner who would approach Greater Farur would be dazzled by the circular islet shimmering like a crystalline ball bobbing in the waves. |

The deepest water around the
island is 30 m at the eastern island while in the western part the
depth is around 11 m.. There is a small community on the island. Fishing is the main occupation of the locals here. There is date palm plantation on this island. This island has a very rich fauna. It is home for many bird species like osprey, crested lark, hoopoe, white eared bulbul, collard dove, great stone plover, humés wheater, bee-eater and citrine wagtail, swallow etc. Mammals like Jebeer Gazella (chinkara) and desert hedgehog are living here. There is although scorpions, saw-scaled vipers and lizards on this island. |
