Notes
:
*
Prime Minister Oda Nobunaga
:
Oda Nobunaga received this title from Emperor Ogimachi in 1578.
He didn't want it, but had to accept it for the sake of courtesy.
He sent a letter of resignation less than three weeks later, at
the first chance to do so without appearing bad-mannered. Oda
had never been a sucker for official titles, and until his death
he never brought up the subject of whether he would use the title
'Shogun' despite his 'wrong blood' (a Taira clan descendant, not
Minamoto or Fujiwara) or not. What mattered to Oda was just that
the Emperor recognized his authority as a substitute of a Shogun,
and the Emperor had done that since 1568. So, nothing else was
needed from him. It took a very long time for the shallow and
ordinary Imperial House to comprehend Oda; they thought he was
like other warlords who coveted the highest Imperial titles under
the Emperor's.
** Hirate Masahide,
etc. were only members of the Board of Advisors of Oda
Nobuhide's years; Nobunaga didn't resort to this board.
***
'Architectural
legacies' only comprise of structures that Oda Nobunaga built,
except the Azuchi castle because it is
now inexistent. He renovated castles in Gifu,
too.
**** Uesugi
Kenshin of
Echigo and Mori Motonari of Aki had never
been Oda Nobunaga's enemies in the usual sense of the word. There
had never been any fight against Mori, and Oda only fought against
Uesugi very late in Uesugi's career -- in fact, when the battle
ensued, Uesugi had already been nearing death by cancer, and decided
to raise up arms against Oda just for the sake of regretting the
wasted years of his youth that he had squandered fighting Takeda
Shingen of Kai in slight borderline-skirmishes. Both Oda and
Uesugi were not really serious about blowing each other off. And
Oda Nobunaga only fought against the Mori clan after Motonari
had died.
