Image of the Bitkim Islands

Bitkim is the largest Island in a dormant volcanic chain in the ocean between the continents. The Island is quite large, and looks almost as if it has been blown away on one side. There's a large cove/bay where the largest volcano blew itself to bits, and a large river flows into it, forming an estuary. Wavecliff Hold is on one side of the estuary and Telyn on the other, with a small Dolphin Hall between them. Wavecliff Hold was founded on the Island during the last Interval as a staging post for ships traveling to and from the Southern Continent. It rapidly grew to quite a size and Bitkim Hold was founded to supply the Island with the needed grain.

The centre of Bitkim Island is mountainous, though the caldera in the centre is the hghest point. Around the mountains and foothills there are quite wide but low-lying fertile plains. Bitkim was founded on the northern plain area, and shortly after, a Healer Hall sprang up to serve the Island. Bitkim Island and the smaller Islands around it were rapidly colonised as people realized that the climate and opportunities that were offered there were good. Turns passed and as the Pass approached the Weyrs decided that the prospering Island could be defended from the North. It was a bad decision. Within two turns the surrounding Islands had been abandoned again and the population was severely depleted, though no Thread had infested the Island. Bitkim Weyr was founded in the old caldera in the centre of the Island by volunteers from; across Pern, including Goldrider Neryse and her dragon Rynith. It was only small, and though it got itself up and running, they struggled to survive.

With Halls and Holds hanging on at below their previous strengths, a nasty Fall was all it took to push Bitkim over the brink. They called for help - and the small relief given by Ista wasn't enough. The Call went out across the  continent - and Fort, High Reaches and Telgar rose to the occasion sending enough riders - and two golds - to keep the Weyr and its vital location 'afloat'.

Politics have never been stable in the Weyr however. Neryse quarreled with the Weyrleader B'kil and returned to Ista, while B'kil himself was severly injured in the fatal Fall. The Weyrleader and Weyrwoman Seconds, M'dyr and Ariana, both stepped up to the challenge, M'dyr becoming Weyrleader at the next flight. However, pregnancy took it's toll on Ariana who returned to her original weyr to recover, leaving the very recently settled Andria and her gold Shaktith to step into the breach.

While all this was going on, the Holds were trying to pull themselves back from the brink. Holders who had lost their stock due to sickness in the North, and those who wanted to expand where there just wasn't room, started to return to the Island. While the smaller Islands haven't been resettled yet there are now three Major Holds on Bitkim Island and several minor ones. Most of the Halls are lacking Masters, but all have Journeymen and Apprentices unwilling to leave their homes. Bitkim is getting back on it's feet.

Technologically Bitkim is more advanced than some other weyrs. Aivas was found and did impart much of its knowledge. However the scheme to knock the Red Star off its path failed, meaning many of the other new technologies  were mistrusted. Especially as Aivas died shortly after the failed mission.  However, paper and books are still used extremely rarely, as well as some  devices like Computers in the Harper Halls.
