This page contains pictures and information about Flatid Planthoppers that we found in the Brisbane area,
Queensland, Australia.
In the Suborder Auchenorrhyncha, the Cicadas family Cicadidae is a
very famous family. The other families in this suborder are less known. They
include the Planthoppers. They are small plant-feeding insects ranging in colour from green, through yellow-green to brown. All
of them jump, so their name hoppers.
Members in this family usually have the triangular and broad fore wings. Most
are green or bright green in colour.

- Common Green Planthopper
-
- Siphanta hebes, subfamily Flatinae, body length 15mm
- This Green Planthopper is triangular in shape with pink eyes and a pointed
head. The forewings cover the body like sloping roof when it rests. This
species has the dot patterns on the wings with brown wing edges. We
identified this species as Siphanta acuta. Dr.
Murray Fletcher sent us email advised that it might be S. hebes rather than
S. acuta.
