CASTLE HALL DAY SCHOOL
Castle Hall school
on Brierley Street opened in 1864 and the new extension which became the
Infants' Department
was added in 1908. It was a Church of England school
and consequently many church activities also took place in this
building.
The top floor of the
school belonged to the Juniors and there were four classrooms and a
large main hall.
The Head Teacher's office was also on this floor, it
was quite a large room and held a lovely old desk and chair and around
the
room were various cupboards and shelves. There was a large fireplace
to your left as you entered the room and in my day
a picture of a very
young Queen Elizabeth II hung on the wall.
Outside the Head Teacher's office were the old stone
steps which led to the lower floor. To the right at the bottom of these
stairs
were the canteen, kitchen and store rooms. The Infants'
Department was to the left and that contained a further three
classrooms
which were separated by folding wooden partitions which had glass windows.
The middle section also served as a hall.
Bad news arrived in 1963. Our wonderful old school was
to close, well at least the Juniors' department.
After almost one hundred
years since it was built it had been declared unsafe and had to be
demolished.
For a time we used classrooms at Hob Hill Unitarian school but
a few years later a brand new school was built and
named Gorse Hall. It
was no longer a church school.
