Alaska halts Gordon's streak
ALASKA Milk, playing more like the defending champion that it is,
displayed grace under pressure to halt Gordon's Gin three-game
winning streak with a 99-91 win last night in the PBA All-Filipino
Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Embarrassed by their 88-63 defeat to Purefoods Corned Beef last
Friday, the Milkmen controlled the game near the end of the first
quarter and were never really threatened, except in the fourth
quarter.
Ahead by eight, 83-75, 7:11 to play, the Milkmen started missing
their shots to enable the Boars to trim their deficit to four, 81-85.
But Johnny Abarrientos, who was limping in the last two quarters
because of a sprained ankle he sustained before the end of the half,
scored four straight points and intercepted a Noli Locsin pass
intended for Jayvee Gayoso to break the Boars' momentum.
Bong Hawkins then converted a short jumper for a 93-84 Alaska
lead, 2:46 remaining in the game.
In the second game, Purefoods patiently nibbled at a 13-point
deficit to outlast Pop Cola in overtime, 101-95, for a second straight
win after two opening losses.
Elmer Lago fired the triple that forced extension at 91-all before
Jerry Codiñera canned four straight points and Dindo Pumaren came
up with two steals to seal the Cowboys' win. -ROMINA AUSTRIA
