The Bailey Family Coat of Arms

The name Bailey was first found in Northumberland where they had been seated from early times. They were granted lands
by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 AD.

My first known Bailey ancestor, Thomas, came from Dunham in Cheshire and he was a coachman.
He had at least two sons, John born in 1843 and Thomas born in 1848, who both migrated to Ashton-under-Lyne.

Family of John born 1843
(my direct ancestor)

John married Elizabeth Ogden who was born in 1846 at Lymm in Cheshire.
They married at St Michael and All Angels Church in Ashton-under-Lyne on the 3rd January, 1866 and witnesses to
the marriage were Thomas Bailey and Emma Ogden.
John was employed as a Coach Man.

Marriage Certificate of John and Elizabeth

John and Elizabeth had two children:

Harvey who was born in 1867 and in 1881 was an apprentice book binder and printer.
Can find no later records regarding Harvey.

Mary Emma (my direct ancestor) was born on the 5th July, 1873 at
81 Wellington Street, Ashton-under-Lyne.

Birth Certificate of Mary Emma

By 1881, Mary Emma's father had died and she was living at 121 Old Street, Ashton with her mother,
who was a provisions dealer, and her brother Harvey.

By 1891 she was orphaned and a servant to Miss Briercliffe, a confectioner of 39 Stamford Street, Ashton.

When she married Samuel in 1897, she was a cotton operative living on Ridge Hill Lane, Stalybridge.
