Poppin' Wheelies CD release party is planned for the day after Thanksgiving, November 24, 2000 at Long Wongs in Tempe. The Gas Giants are scheduled to perform the entire Poppin' Wheelies CD with special guest musicians: Roger Clyne, Scotty Johnson, and Lawrence Zubia. More info to come.

The Gas Giants have been officially released from the Atomic Pop Record Label. They are currently working on a new Official Gas Giants website and a Poppin' Wheelies website. They are also working on new material for the next album.

Ryan posted this info to the Gas Giants mailing list:

Hey everyone,

With not much going on in GG land, I’ve resorted to lurking for the last…while :-). However, I do have some news to pass along today. I am a DJ at KASC The Blaze, which is the Arizona State University campus radio station. Our advisor is none other than Leah Miller, who as some of you know hosted Leah’s Local Zone on KZON before it went to hell. She is good friends with Robin, and I went to her with the idea of interviewing Robin, since I knew she knows him and that the boys are in town right now.

Well, he said yes! I’ll be sitting down with him next Thursday, November 9 at 4pm. It could last 30 minutes, or it could last until 6 (the end of my shift). It just depends on whatever Robin wants to do. This a huge thrill for me and I’ve already prepared a list of questions. The station doesn’t have a great broadcast range, so those of you not right on ASU’s campus (most of you) can listen on the Internet. Check out The Blaze. That’s 4pm, uh, Arizona time :-). I think we’re aligned with Mountain now, and we’re 2 hours behind the East Coast.

Hope you all tune in. I know I’m going to have a blast!

Public Enemy And Ice-T's Label Shuts Down
edited by Craig Rosen

(9/11/00, 4 p.m. ET) - Atomic Pop, an Internet-based record company that released such rap acts as Public Enemy and Ice-T, has shut down. The staff was told on Friday (September 8) that the label was closing, according to published reports.

Run by industry veteran Al Teller, Atomic Pop had been having financial problems and was unable to secure a financial investor. One-time backer Rare Medium pulled its support, according to published reports.

Teller, a former executive at both MCA and CBS Records, started Atomic Pop less than two years ago. The label released Public Enemy's There's A Poison Goin On ... in 1999, and Ice-T's 7th Deadly Sin in 1999 and Greatest Hits: The Evidence in August.

Please vote for Robin in Citysearch's "The Best of Phoenix" contest for "best local singer".
He deserves it! He's up against Roger Clyne and Alice Cooper.

CitySearch: the best of Phoenix

Here's a letter from Robin, that Jay at Atomic Pop posted to the Gas Giants mailing list!

Greetings to everyone on the Gas Giants List. Summer 2000. Wow.

The Gas Giants are glad to be home in Phoenix, fixing our gear, writing new songs, and preparing a fall tour. I am pleased to announce our second single will be "Now the Change". It is my favorite Gas Giants song because of the many blatant Queen and Tom Petty references, and it best represents what I hope to accomplish with the band. "Now the Change" should hit airwaves in September, with the tour starting soon after.

To hear a lo band version of "Now The Change", copy this url into your address window - http://idirector.media.ibeam.com/netshow/atomicpop1099/full/audio/gasgiants/nowthechange_56k.asx

Before the tour begins we have shows in Phoenix (Sept 15 Bash On Ash), Seattle, Chicago (August 6 Oz Park Festival in Lincoln Park), and we'll be working in our studio to put the finishing touches on The Poppin' Wheelies record. For those of you who haven't heard, "The Poppin' Wheelies" are a cartoon Rock band in space, that I have created with help from my wife, Gena. I am producing all of the music for the full length record which will be available this fall, and will feature 8 pages of incredible comic art by Liquid! Graphics and Alejandro Garza, the team behind the hit comic "E.V.E Protomecha".

I have also just released the first CD on my new label Uranus Laboratories. The record is called "Uranus Presents: New & Used Vol. 1", and is an 8 band, 16 song compilation. It features friends of mine that have worked in my studio, and it represents a diverse sample of the most prolific generation of Arizona musicians ever. The CD also features songwriter Steve French, who is from nowhere near Arizona, but has nonetheless contributed songs to the Gas Giants and Poppin' Wheelies records. For fans of those records, this is a rare chance to hear more of Steve's work.

"Uranus Presents: New & Used Vol. 1", is available in limited supplies in Phoenix area record stores, or by copying this url into your address window - http://www.atomicpop.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/AtomicPop.woa/wa/atomic?linkType=meta&id=346&type=APShopProduct

I hope to see you all at the shows. I always visit the merch booth after a performance. Please come by and say hello. Thanks for listening.

It can also be purchased from the Gas Giants official site. The CD was released in stores on October 12, 1999.

The Martini Ranch show was the last one the band will play as Pharoahs 2000 (P2K). They've decided to change their name to Gas Giants, and as of July 1st it is official and legal that they can use the new name. On August 12th at Alice Cooperstown they formally debuted as Gas Giants. They had T-shirts for sale and gave away the 4 song CD single of "Quitter" that night (which includes Quitter, Stinking Up the Charts, They Don't Know and an acoustic version of Quitter). The Quitter single is currently for sale on the Gas Giants official website along with T-shirts and hats.

Bassist G. Brian Scott is no longer a member of Gas Giants. Scott Andrews of the Pistoleros filled in at KZON's cd release party of "Leah's Local Zone Take One" at The Bash on Ash on April 30, 1999. Dan's brother Dave Henzerling joined them for the Cinco de Mayo Party at Macayo's Depot Cantina May 5, 1999 and at Martini Ranch on June 11, 1999. Mickey Ferrell of Grevious Angels has been filling in on bass.

They signed with A&M records in November of 1997. Their debut album "From Beyond the Backburner" was recorded in Tempe at Wilson and Rhodes' Mayberry Recording Studio and was mixed in Memphis, Tennessee at Ardent Recording Studios with Gin Blossoms producer John Hampton. The album's release was put on hold due to changes going on in the music industry (Universal/Polygram merger). The band has officially been released from their contract with A&M (Interscope) and have finally received permission to release the record on their own. Their song "Quitter" has been getting heavy airplay on 101.5 KZON.

Gas Giants played at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Block Party on New Years Eve (Dec. 31, 1998). They went to Las Vegas for four weeks in January of 1999. They also played at the Viper Room in California. They have been playing a lot around the valley and if you get a chance check them out, you won't be disappointed.
