Town of Gaspé

Gespeg, in the Micmac language, means land's end. Curiously, today Gaspé is associated with the birth of the country, the beginning of western history in North America. The cross planted here in 1534 by Jacques Cartier has earned it the title, "Cradle of Canada", but the historical interest of Gaspé is not limited merely to Cartier's symbolic gesture. Indeed, the municipality has published a guide proposing a tour of its historical sites and monuments. The itinerary commemorates some fifteen events that have marked the history of the fisheries, navigation, military installations , tourism, salmon fishing and the early days of aviation. History buffs and the curious have a wide choice: the Regional Museum ,
Gespeg Micmac village
, Manoir LeBoutillier and heritage of the Gaspé Peninsula.

Forillon Park

To understand and truly experience the encounter between sea and mountain, a visit to
Forillon National Park
is in order. The park is located at the northern end of the Appalachian Mountain Range. Jutting into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the north shore, with its spectacular cliffs, is home to thousands of sea birds and presents a magnificent view. The south shore is studded with scores of intimate coves, where for generations people have made their livelihoods fishing.

On this rocky peninsula, where nature is at its untamed best, visitors can discover richly diverse and sometimes unusual plant life, as well as abundant wildlife . The numerous hiking trails and campsites in the park offer an ideal way to witness this amazing beauty first hand.

Percé

At the turn of the century Percé, a renowned resort, was busy receiving its first tourists. From 1930 to 1960, Percé was a very popular cultural center. Artists flocked here, drawn by the picturesque aspect of the fisherman and by the magnetism of the site.

You will be fascinated whether you come from the north by way of the Pic de L'Aurore or from the south by Côte de la Surprise. The dominating presence of the famous rocher Percé and Ile Bonaventure with its thousands of gannets and seagulls create an unforgettable image.

You can reach the rock on foot at low tide, go to Ile Bonaventure by boat, enjoy watersports or walk along the trails. You can also discover a cave by following the trail sentier du Mont Sainte-Anne, beginning behind the church (3 kilometers). Another trail will take you by way of Route des Failes (falls) to the Crevasse (3 kilometers). Inquire at the tourist information office.

Percé Rock is about 400 meters long and 88 meters high at the very tip. It is limestone and weighs 5 trillion tons.

Ile Bonaventure

An overflowing measure of history, wildlife, vegetation and geology characterizes this park. Discoveries abound when you go on an excursion to Ile Bonaventure. You will see a windswept conifer forest sheltering a whole world of lichen, moss and mushrooms. A profusion of wildflowers bloom on the island, and over 200,000 birds nest there. Among these, the gannet colony, 50,000 strong, offers a breathtaking spectacle. There is also an exhibition of the island's fauna, flora and history, walks with nature guides, picnic areas and snackbar.
