A tribute to Glad Valley and my memories.... I remember the first time I went there in 1979 and how the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains captured my soul. I remember how I used to feel "protected" at GV and how excited I was to be away from home for the first time. I remember feeling free and young and alive for the first time. I remember my late grandfather and I spending the night at a little cottage outside of Sparta one time. I remember Joy Watson almost not accepting me because I asked Andy how to smuggle drugs in and he told Joy. I remember shovel ng coal at 5:00am many times. I remember working our butts off clearing the brush from around the "lake". I remember how I used to love to look at Bulls Head Mountain and always wanted to climb it but never did. I remember the day Mike Ruben threatened my life if I played my RUSH 2001 album "one more time". I remember planting the trees behind the infirmary and washing a lot of dishes. I remember watching TV on cold winter nights in the girls dorm lounge. I remember how Earline used to feed me between meal , cause she loved me. I remember coming back from being thrown out and all of my stuff was gone! I remember how Kurk Gauker used to love warm Budweiser. I remember how we used to stick our arm up the coke machine in Thom Dorm to steal cokes. I remember ho we hung blankets from the ceilings in the dorm to have "rooms". I remember Bobby and Al living in the infirmary. I remember a little guy named Trip and a big guy named Deck. I remember the "gypsum seed incident"; hell I was the incident, ha! I remember he giant American flag in Glen's room. I remember John Glaefki turning me on to Frank Zappa, "Joe's Garage". I remember church service on Sundays. I remember keeping beer cold in milk cartons hanging from the windows in the dorm. I remember how we all use to cheat like hell in Darrel's class. I remember turning on the light switch in Dave's class in the middle of the night and seeing the security guard standing at the window, and running like hell. I remember when Chuck Highfill went loco and broke his ha d over a certain girl. I remember little Kim and how I tried to love her. I remember Slow and how she really was slow. I remember Mark and Broody and how he loved climbing. I remember when they reopened Kelenburger and we moved in. I remember the day John Lambers and Gram Newton beat the living hell out of each other. I remember Scott the drummer from Charlotte. I remember Fairly and Fay the dorm counselors, and the day Fay busted me. I remember watching the Meat Plant down the road burn to the ground whil I was taking a shower one morning. I remember how a bunch of drugged maniacs used to break into my room at night and beat me up, for fun. I remember getting caught in the girl's dorm at 3:00am. I remember playing volleyball in the gym. I remember the "ad enture" course. I remember how nice all of the maintenance and cafeteria workers were to me. I remember having nice dinners with CD and his mom and playing pool upstairs. I remember the day Nelson threw the bottle and got in trouble and had to CUT HIS HAI . I remember Steve Richy and Elizabeth and how they treated me so nice. I remember Donny and Liz and Jay and Nadjia. I remember catching Porky and someone doing something in his car at Stone Mountain. I remember going to concerts in Charlotte. I remember when two hippies came to visit on a motorcycle and slammed into a tree down the road killing both of them. I remember Jamie "wattage" kicking me out. I remember playing pool in Dr Jackson's basement. I remember Roy's mom and how nice she was. I remember s meone destroying the chair that had been in my family for generations (f__k you). I remember watching Saul Chase do the jitterbug at a party. I remember the day we got the "mini" bus and how "wattage" used to drive it like a bat out of hell. I remember we used to go to Virginia to get beer because it had more alcohol in it. I remember Charlie the drug king. I remember trading my grannies brownies for dope. I remember the day Todd and Margo were married at the little church. I remember when I got my red tru k and we used to pile it full of girls and beer and go to Stone Mountain for the weekend. I remember doing LSD in the cemetery. I remember my roommates Jeff, Slade, Mike Ruiz, Robert Bell, Billy Mathis, and John Lambers. I remember crazy George from Venez ela. I remember going sledding in the meadow. I remember building fires below the soccer field. I remember Jeff Wanless and Paul Love and how they loved Black Sabbath and Ozzy. I remember how I loved the fall and the leaves turned golden brown. I remember the "coffee houses" and how Roy, Fay, Farley, and some others played the guitars. I remember Sherry the dorm counselor "adjusting" my spine in her room. I remember spending the night at Sherry's house and getting stoned drunk on my 18th birthday. I rememb r Kim Mauck taking us to Bowman Grey hospital to look at cadavers. I remember Roy Turrentine always calling me skinny (I still love ya Roy). I remember watching someone burn a bible in the girl's dorm fireplace. I remember going to the Greek cafe to buy s ndwiches in Sparta. I remember skinning a squirrel for Kim's class. I remember the parties John Galefki used to have at his house in Charlotte. I remember Chuck and Amy and the day I found out about her from Carry. I remember smoking dope with one of the orm counselors in my room. I remember the day I fell off of the waterfall. I remember how nice Billy's family was to me. I remember when Donny, Jay, and I went camping, drank "green" beer and the warden brought all of our crap back. I remember Grinder the dog. I remember Molly the teacher. I remember when they searched all of our bags at Winston Salem bus station and I got caught. I remember getting the living crap beat out of me, because his girl friend liked me. I remember Andy from Key West and seeing h m years later with his parents. I remember the dorm searches. I remember going to the old GV store to buy food. I remember how Carry used to treat me like her brother and how I still love her. I remember receiving the first "Valley Ventures" award. I reme ber going snow skiing and going camping up at Blowing Rock. I remember Kelly and Bear and his old truck with a camper on the back, and how nice they treated me. I remember camping at Stone Mountain almost every weekend. I remember making love to some beau iful people. I remember the graduation party up at the hotel that had separate little cottages. I remember being drunk and stoned for 4 entire years. I remember A LOT MORE but I don't have room to put it in here. I remember knowing that I was going to hav to leave my home away from home and face the world like a man. I remember the day we graduated and how Sherry kept me from crying. I remember how my heart felt when I saw that all the trees behind Snow Auditorium had been cut down. I remember seeing Thom Dorm stuffed full of hay and the roof leaking. I remember walking through the girl's dorm empty and isolated. I remember seeing all of the cafeteria equipment scattered around. I remember seeing old friends names carved in the desks and the windowsills. I remember driving down the hill and feeling sad that part of my life was closed and rotting into the ground. I remember wishing that I could go back and do it all again....

I just returned fom Atlanta last week and saw an exit for Sparta, NC which brought up memories of Glade Valley. Thinking that I could find just about anything on the WWW I typed in Glade Valley and I found this site. While at Glade Valley, albeit my sta was short, it was an adventure. I've often wondered what happened to guys like Bill Prather, "Golfball", Patsy Powers, Max Drake, Lisa Howard (the only girl in the freshman class), my roommates Billy Church and Gordon Gartrell, and all the others. The 0's were strange times for all of us with the music, the drugs, sexual expression - my God! - it's a wonder any of us made it to adulthood. Your site has helped me rekindle some memories that I thought were long gone - Thanks!
