Side View of Lawrence and Ida's home “Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence McMahan are the parents of eight children, six sons and two daughters, and have lived in the same commodious farm home during the entire fifty years of married life (as of October, 1933) which is a fact that can be stated in regard to very few couples in this age of restlessness and migratory tendencies. The door hinges of their home have ever been lubricated with the oil of hospitality and its portals swing wide for the reception of many friends. On numerous occasions it has been a scene of merriment and gaiety to gatherings of young people, who were entertained by the McMahan children as they grew up into young manhood and womanhood, and there are probably men ad women now living in nearly every State in the Union whose minds often revert to delightful entertainments enjoyed here and their fond memories will grow dearer to them with the flight of time. From this home, three sons, Clifton, Claude and Paul – enlisted for service in the World War. Their maternal grandfather, William a. Barron, was a Confederate veteran, belonging to Co. C., Orr’s Regiment, and their great grand father (Archibald) McMahan was a soldier in the (Indian and) Revolutionary War. The two daughters, Mesdames F. L. Pickett and E. R. Shanklin, reside in Rockingham, N.C. and Occoquan, Va., respectively. One son, Claude, is engaged in business in Lorton, VA., Clifton, Paul, J.B. and W.A. (Pat) still reside in their native Community.” (Keowee Courier, October 23, 1933, “Mr. and Mrs. W. L. McMahan Celebrate…)” Monday, October 16, 1933 was their 50th wedding anniversary and an elaborate celebration had been planned, to be attended by friends and relatives, but their youngest son, J. Calvin died on September 5, and the celebration was canceled. “However, near the approach of the anniversary date a number of their neighbors and friends became obsessed by the idea of giving them a happy surprise. Consequently, on Sunday, the 15th quite a number congregated at the home bringing boxes loaded with various appetizing delicacies, and a veritable wedding feast was enjoyed to the full.” (IBID).
