Hillside High School

Hillside High School

From its modest beginnings in the 1940's, when it was known as African-American high school, Hillside High School has grown into one of the nation's most outstanding institutions of higher learning. As a International Baccalaureate appointed high school, HHS offers an educational experience that cannot be matched anywhere in city. In fact, only a small number of institutions across the nation can offer the wealth of opportunities that awaits students at HHS. At Hillside, there is a tradition of value.

Hillside High School Facts

Memorial Hall

History - During segregation, there were two major high schools in Durham Co: Durham High, and Hillside. Hillside was the African American school in the district. Not until the mid 60's was Hillside integrated, but its historically black roots, left an indelible impression on the people of Durham. In 1995, Hillside moved from their previous location on the NCCU campus, to Fayetteville Street. Eunice Sanders is the principal.

Students - Hillside High has a population of approximately 1,040 students. The racial makeup is approx. 93% black, 4% other, and 3% white.

Faculty - There are 1,875 full-time faculty on the Lexington campus and approximately 95 percent of them hold the highest possible degrees in their fields. UK's faculty and staff attract more than $175 million annually in grants, contracts and gifts.

Academic Programs - Hillside provides a comprehensive instructional program to meet the demands of its students. The school offers a wide range of Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate Programme. The Science department maintains an active relationship with several Research Triangle facilities. The school is also the site for a specialized Business and Finance Academy and a Law and Justice Academy. Students may study electronics, food service, cosmetology, and child care through the Workforce Development courses, as well as traditional business classes. Highly specialized or advanced courses which may not be available to most high school students are taught electronically through the Distant Learning Lab and the Virtual High School. The Arts Department enjoys a fine reputation, and Hillside students have performed nationally and internationally. For the most part, classes at the school follow the traditional six period daily schedule, although a few specialized classes are on a block schedule.

Support Resources - All schools have school nurses, counselors, psychologists, and social workers to assist students. We also have the resources listed below to support students' learning needs: CAPS (Creative Arts in the Public Schools), Career Development, Computer Lab, Conflict Resolution, Peer Mediation, STARS, Tutoring Program and Wellness Center.

Sports - With several state titles in men's and women's track & field, Hillside has made a name for itself on the track. In 1996, the Hillside women's basketball team won the 4A state title, claiming it for the first time in the sports history at HHS. In 2000, the men's track team took the state championship in 4A division. And last year, Hillside's women's track took the 3A state championship.
