Bible Doctrine Study Guides Hosea {There were 4 great prophets to the Northern Kingdom of Israel (the 10 tribes who revolted from the rule of Judah - since it was lead by the tribe of Ephraim it is often referred to as Ephraim) - Elijah, Elisha, Amos, and Hosea. They operated over a period of about 150 years. Elijah was from circa 871 to 851 BC. Elisha was 845 BC and following. Amos was 787 BC. Hosea was 746 BC. The historical account of the administration of the 5th cycle of discipline to the Northern Kingdom is found in II Kings Chapter 17. The book of Hosea is about suffering. Hosea married a woman named Gomer. Gomer was a very beautiful woman and many men were attracted to her. She became dissatisfied with Hosea. And, after her third child (not Hosea's) she runs away with one of the princes of Israel. Hosea was left with three children and a congregation and absent the wife that he loved - doctrine of suffering. Later, the prince is tired of Gomer and she becomes a slave. Hosea goes to the slave market and bought her and freed her and restored her to her place in his home. God told Hosea to write his story -because it is also the story of God dealing with His 'right woman' - Israel (and of His dealing with the entire human race). God remains faithful and we go astray. Being sinners is analogous to the adulterous wife. And, Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross purchases all mankind from the slavemarket of sin.} Chapter 1
