Mark

The gospels were written by 4 men discussing the same topic (the incarnation of Christ), but from 4 different points of view and they emphasize different areas. Matthew presents Jesus Christ as Messiah the King - events are presented in chronological order. Luke presents Jesus Christ as the 'Son of Man' - the ideal Man and is presented in logical order. Mark presents Jesus as the Servant of the Father. And, John presents Jesus Christ as the Eternal Son of God - emphasizing the deity of Christ.

The Recipients of the 'good news' (gospel) were also different. Matthew was written to the Jews and was written in Aramaic or the Hebrew of the time. Mark was written to the Romans. Luke was written to the Gentiles. And, John was written to everyone.

The divine author is God the Holy Spirit. The human author was the John Mark who we also say in Acts 12:12. John Mark was related to Barnabas - the first great man of grace. See Acts for more on John Mark and Barnabas.

John Mark was too young to have been an eyewitness to the events in this book. RBT says it is very likely that John Mark was the scribe for the Apostle Peter and the events described in Mark were related to John Mark by the Apostle Peter. This book was written for Gentile believers - primarily the Romans. It takes Peter's knowledge and John Mark translates it into a written style that would have been appreciated by the Roman readers.

Mark probably was published in Rome in 63 AD about the same time that Paul was writing the Prison Epistles and 5 years AFTER Romans was written.}

Chapter 1
{The Ministry of John the Baptist}
1:1``The beginning of the gospel/'good news' {euaggelion}
of Jesus Christ . . . Son of God {huios - Theos}.

1:2-3`` Just as {kathos}
it has been written - in the past with results that last forever -
  {grapho - perfect 'completed action in the past' tense}
in Isaiah the prophet {Isaiah 40:3 with Malachi 3:1},
Behold {idou - means 'pay attention!'}
"I am 'sending on a mission under my authority' {apostello}
my messenger {aggelos}
  {aggelos - this is the word from which we get 'angel' - an angel is a
  'messenger from God' it refers here to John the'Baptist' - but John
  the Herald is more accurate since his main job was to be the
  Herald to the coming of the King of Kings - Jesus Christ}
'before/'ahead of' You {Jesus},
who {John} will prepare Your {Jesus'} Way . . . 1:3``
 the voice of one
calling out in the desert/'uninhabited areas' {eremos} . . .

'Prepare the Way of the Lord {an order},
make His paths straight.'"

1:4``There arose John, the one who baptizes,
in the desert/'uninhabited areas' {eremos}
heralding/preaching {kerusso - to announce the arrival of a King}
a baptism of repentance/'change of mind' {metanoia}
  {metanoia - does NOT mean to 'be sorry' - it means 'to change your
  mental attitude and conduct'}
for the 'remission of the penalty' {aphesis} of sins {hamartia}.

{Note: All your personal sins were never imputed to you and judged. Instead, they were all imputed to Jesus Christ as your substitute and judged on the cross. Instead you were born with the 'sin of the father' - Adam's sin was passed down from father to child throughout history. So, you were born condemned and spiritually dead. When you are saved by faith, the sin of the father in you is forgiven and you receive many things from God, starting with the imputation of His righteousness.}

{John - As John the One Who Baptizes}
1:5``And there kept on coming out {ekporeuomai}
face to face with him {John the Herald}
all {the inhabitants} of the land of Judea and Jerusalem
and all kept on being baptized
by him {John the Baptist} in the Jordan River,
as they were confessing their sins.

1:6``And there was this John,
clothed habitually in a garment made of camel's hair
and/with a leather belt around his waist/loins.

And he customarily ate locusts and wild honey.

{John - As John the Herald of the King of Kings}
1:7``And, he {John} continually heralded/proclaimed {kerusso} saying, "There comes after me . . . the One {Jesus Christ}
who is 'mightier in mind and body' {ischuros} than I.

The thong of Whose sandals,
I am not worthy to bend down and untie.

1:8``As for myself {John}, I baptize you with water.

But He {Jesus} will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

{Note: Baptizo means ' to be identified with'. The ritual of a water baptism means that you understand and accept Who and What He is. You voluntarily desire to be associated with Him. The 'dry baptism' of God the Holy Spirit, is the baptism that saves. In the Church Age, all believers in Jesus Christ are permanently indwelled with God the Holy Spirit at the point of salvation. This is not something you 'feel'. It is something that occurs. And, since you did not earn or deserve salvation, you also can do nothing to lose this salvation. It is a permanent gift of God.}

1:9``And it came to pass {kai ginomai - introduces a new subject}
in those days . . . Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
and was baptized by John in the Jordan {River}.

{Note: This was a completely unique baptism. Jesus was without sin. He did not need to 'recognize' He was a sinner who needed a redeemer. Instead, as the redeemer, He here is voluntarily being identified with the plan of God. He is demonstrating that He will go to the cross of His own free will.}

1:10``And immediately { euthetos}
as He was coming up out of the water,
He {Jesus} saw the heavens splitting apart
and the Spirit { pneuma} . . .
descending like a dove . . .
'into' {eis} Him.

{Note: In the 1st incarnation of Jesus Christ, He voluntarily set aside the attributes of His own deity. Instead, He will operate under the power of the indwelling of God the Holy Spirit. This is important because this is now the power that all believers in the Church Age operate! He gave us a 'prototype' of God's Righteous Way to life. Now we have the More Excellent Way of Jesus Christ' to imitate! And, pay attention to the fact that 'eis' means 'into' - instead of 'epi' which would mean 'on'. This is the first case of the indwelling of God the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, certain ones had 'God WITH them' - and they could lose this (as David prayed 'take not Your Spirit from me'). That RBT calls a temporary 'enduement'. Now believers are permanently INdwelled. }

1:11``And a voice came 'out from within' {ek} heaven,
" 'As for You in contradistinction to all others' {su} . . .
You keep on being . . . My Son { huios} . . .
the Beloved One {agapetos}.

In You {Jesus} . . . I am well pleased."

{Note: Ek here tells us that heaven is a physical place. It has boundaries. His voice came out from within heaven.}

1:12``And immediately, the Spirit
'threw out'/'cast out'/'expelled {ekballo}
Him into the desert/'uninhabited areas' {eremos}

{Note: Matthew uses 'anago' for 'was led up' and Luke uses 'agao' for 'was lead'. But Mark uses the stronger 'ekballo' indicating the reality of His thinking. Jesus was concentrating hard on all the doctrine He had learned and would need in His confrontation with and temptations by Satan. Wuest says 'this is not the expression of unwillingness to go . . . but intense preoccupation of mind."}

1:13``And, He Jesus} kept on being
in the desert/'uninhabited areas' {eremos}
forty days . . . being constantly tempted {peirazo} by Satan.

And, He was with the 'wild animals' {therion}.
  {may represent 'armies of fallen angels'}

And the angels were constantly ministering {diakoneo}
to Him/'His needs'.

{Note: Wuest indicates that bible expositors have suggested that 'therion' is to indicate how uninhabited this area is. But, in Revelation Chapters 11-19, 'therion' is also the Greek word used to represent the 'Beast Dictator' and for angelic leaders of armies of fallen angels. It seems that this makes more sense here. We know that Satan was here. We know that elect angels were also here. It makes sense that Satan's army of fallen angels were also here.}

{Note: Diakoneo is the word from which we get 'deacon'. It means to serve or to minister to another.}

1:14-15``Now, after John was
'put in prison'/'betrayed over' {paradidomi},
Jesus went into Galilee
'making a public proclamation'/heralding {kerusso}
the gospel/'good news' {euaggelion} of God 1:15``
and saying, "The time
'has been fulfilled in the past with results
that last forever' { pleroo - perfect tense}
and the kingdom {plan} of God is near.

Be 'having a change of mind regarding your former life'/repenting
  {metanoeo - the more emotional form of 'repent' (homologeo is the
  objective version of repent)}
and 'be putting your faith in'/believe {a command}
the gospel/'good news'!"

1:16``Now, while He {Jesus} 'was walking'
  {peripateo - means to walk along or, spiritually to 'Walk in the
  righteous Way of God' - both apply here}
along the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon
  {later to be renamed 'Petros'/Peter (little chip) by Jesus} . . .
and Andrew . . . Simon's brother,
casting {ballo} a net into the sea . . . for they were fishermen.

1:17``And, Jesus said to them, "Come {deute} . . . after Me,
"and I will make to become fishers of men/mankind
  {anthropos - the generic word for people of both sexes}."

1:18``And, immediately, having put off their nets,
they 'followed as a student/disciple' {akoloutheo} Him.

1:19``And, going on a little farther,
He {Jesus} saw James . . . {the son} of Zebedee,
and John, his brother, who were also in their boats . . . mending nets.

{Note: The apostles James and John were the sons of Zebedee and their mother Salome. They were also called the 'sons of thunder' apparently because of huge speaking voices. James was an early martyr of the church. John wrote the epistle of John, John I, II and III and the book of Revelation (the book of James was written by the half-brother of Jesus - James - who became a believer AFTER the resurrection and ruled the assembly of believers in Jerusalem - so that James is NOT the James mentioned here).}

1:20``And, immediately He {Jesus} called {kaleo} them,
and having left their father, Zebedee,
in the boat with the hired men, they went off after Him {Jesus}.
