Ruth

Chapter 4
1`` Then went Boaz up to the gate,
and sat him down there.

And, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by.

Unto whom he said,
"Ho, such a one!

Turn aside, sit down here."

And he turned aside, and sat down.

2`` And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said,
"Sit you all down here."

And they sat down.

3``And he said unto the kinsman,
"Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab,
sells a parcel of land,
which was our brother Elimelech's."

4`` "And I thought to advise you, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people.

If you will redeem it, redeem it.

But if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know.

For there is no one to redeem it beside you.

And I am after you {to do it}."

And he said, "I will redeem it."

5``Then said Boaz,

"What day you buy the field of the hand of Naomi,
you must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess,
the wife of the dead,
to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance."

6``And the kinsman said,
"I cannot redeem it for myself,
lest I mar my own inheritance.

Redeem you my right to yourself
for I cannot redeem it."

7``Now this was the manner in former time in Israel
concerning redeeming and concerning changing.

For to confirm all things,
a man plucked off his shoe,
and gave it to his neighbor.

And this was a testimony in Israel.

8``Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz,
"Buy it for you."

So he drew off his shoe.

9{Boaz Uses the Law of Posterity - See Genesis 38:8}

9~~Then Boaz
  {who was the great grandfather of King David}
announced to the elders, and to all the people,
"You all are witnesses this day,
that I have bought from Naomi
'all that was'/'the property of'
Elimelech's, Chilion's and Mahlon's."

{Note: These three men had died without male heirs. So, their land was subject to forfeiture.}

10~~ "Moreover Ruth, the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon,
have I acquired/purchased to be my wife . . .
in order to maintain the name of the dead {Mahlon}
  {under the law of posterity, the name of Mahlon and all its rights
  would be perpetuated by Boaz fathering children given Mahlon's
  name}
with his property/inheritance . . .
so that 'his name'/'the name of the dead'
will not disappear from 'the family records'/'among his brethren',
and from the 'town records'/'gate of his place'.
You all are witnesses this day
  {clarifying that this is a courtroom setting}."

11``And all the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said,
"We are witnesses.

Jehovah/God make the woman who is come into your house
like Rachel and like Leah,
which two did build the house of Israel.

And do you worthily in Ephratah,
and be famous in Bethlehem."

12``And let your house be like the house of Pharez,
whom Tamar bare unto Judah,
of the seed which Jehovah/God
shall give you of this young woman.

13``So Boaz took Ruth,
and she was his wife.

And when he went in unto her,
Jehovah/God gave her conception,
and she bare a son.

14~~And the women said unto Naomi,
"Blessed be Jehovah/God
  {the Lord here is referring to Jesus Christ - the future descendent
  of David},
Who has not left you this day without a kinsman,
that his name/reputation/person may be famous in Israel
  {the kinsman here is a reference to the future king David}.

{Note: David was famous in Israel because he was a humble and faithful man - he never touched the glory of God. All the glory was the Lord's. He was always Grace Oriented.}

15``And he shall be unto you a restorer of your life,
and a nourisher of your old age.

For your daughter in law, who loves you,
which is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.

16`` And Naomi took the child,
and laid it in her bosom,
and became nurse unto it.

17~~And the women, her neighbors,
gave it a name, saying,
"There is a son born to Naomi."

And they called his name Obed.

He is the father of Jesse . . . {and Jesse is} the father of David.

{Note: so in Israel we have apostasy and lawlessness. But while all this evil was going on, something fabulous was happening in Moab - the line that would bring David and Jesus into the world was continuing.}

18-22~~ Now these are the generations of Pharez:
Pharez begat Hezron. 19~~

And Hezron begat Ram.

And Ram begat Amminadab. 20~~

And Amminadab begat Nahshon.

And Nahshon begat Salmon
  {husband of Rahab the prostitute}. 21~~

And Salmon begat Boaz
  {mother of Boaz is Rahab - see Matthew 1:5}.

And Boaz begat Obed. 22~~

And Obed begat Jesse.

And Jesse begat David.

{Note: At the end of Judges (21:25) we have . . . 'and there was no king in the land'. Now we have ' . . . and Jesse begat David'. God is turning the cursing of Judges Chapters 19, 20 and 21 to blessing.}
