Librarian's Almanac for January, 2001
January 4th

SEATTLE RUINS, WASHINGTON STATE- Thom Burnett, the Law Dog for the region, is reporting another sighting of the renegade "Hellcat" Bradley. The cast-off from the Engineer's Society was spotted leaving the ruins of the Redmond-Bellevue area in her modified hover truck. The notorious technoshaman seems to have won a few more supporters. Along with the reviously reported light combat can, there are three new wasters, one of which sports the hair-free look of a Syker.

YUMA VILLAGE, ARIZONA- Dalton Barker announces his impending nuptials to Melody Arkham. Ceremonies and a small dance are planned for the town hall. Melody Arkham currently oversees the Guard Corps for the village and Dalton Barker is the replacement for David Cannon, the Law Dog removed from his position last month after substantiated charges of corruption. Attendance is open and no gifts are required.

NEAR BEAUMONT, TEXAS- Emily Turner, Ike Statler, Mitch Burke, and Otis Bell have all been confined to one home in town. The town mayor, sheriff, head farmer, and resident electrician respectively, were all discovered to be missing their shadows in a town meeting yesterday. The confinement was completely voluntary and they have stated that they will remain isolated until both a cause and cure can be found. Any experts in the occult are asked to pay the town a visit for an immediate consultation. Payment is negotiable.

MOVIE TOWN, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA- Two locations scout for the Director in Movie Town log the discovery of the Vannacutt luxury resort on the northwestern edge of the Bitterwater Mesa located north of Shan Fan. Upon preliminary investigation, the area looks well enough as can be expected. The eleven story main building has kept its Art Deco construction very well through the years. The grounds are well overgrown and have a wide variety of small mutant animals inhabiting the underbrush. Both Preston and Childs have the gut notion that the resort is inhabited but there were no obvious signs of such.

LAS CRUCES RUINS, NEW MEXICO- Wasters in transit through the ruins have noticed an alarming number of savages in the area. In comparison with those living in the University, an estimated sixty young ferals have arrived into the ruins over the past month. There is no explanation at present for the throwback migration.

BLUE RIDGE, NORTH DAKOTA- Observers from the indian community of Fars Landing report a large series of explosions spread over a couple of days, outside of town. The local "Medicine Man" says that the "soul stealers are awake once more".

BOISE, IDAHO- the searchers sent out to find the Templar Robbie Dawson and his group return with the head of James Gilbert Quincy in a box, still alive but babbling incoherently about the man with the black eyes. The appendage in the box in question appears to be a cyborg. Submitted by the prolific Brother Dominic, Journeyman Librarian

BOISE, IDAHO- the head of James Gilbert Quincy is found burnt to cinders, leaving only the barest fragments for dental records. No one remembers hearing or seeing anything apart from a young boy who remembers playing with the big man who didn't wear clothes. Locals are discussing moving the remnants outside of town. MOUNTAIN HOME, IDAHO- The scouts named Preston and Childs logged a very odd report concerning the local Ghost Storm. Just after moonrise, the storm abruptly dissolved. After observing from a distance for nearly four hours, the scouts ventured closer for a detailed examination. After returning, both scouts swear that there is no sign of the Ghost Storm, only the blast devastation remains. A  caravan returning from Washington state also reported a battered blue pick up leaving the area at roughly nine P.M.

BIG BEND, TEXAS- Local scouts are reporting multiple foot-trails discovered heading northward from the banks of the Rio Grande. The tracks themselves have folks a little jumpy. At first, they only appeared in sets of ones and twos. In the past week, groups of seven and eight have been discovered. The tracks are of larger than human size with each stride almost four feet
apart. The shape of the print seems to be something with four small toes with webbing between each digit.

BROWNSVILLE REFUGE, TEXAS- Someone has declared war on the Law Dogs. The Refuge Guard repulsed a furious assault by a large road gang who were demanding to have local Law Dog "Steel" Zachary turned over to them as a hostage for the town's safety. The Mayor refused and the Guards managed to capture a few of the gangers when the main force retreated towards the coast. Under interrogation, the roadies revealed that bandit gangs across the Wasted West have been approached with the offer of spook juice, ammunition, weapons and vehicles in return for the capture and safe delivery of any one calling themselves a Law Dog. The prisoners are to be taken to the ruins of the El Paso Metroplex and left in the old Chamizal historic Museum. The gangers have no description of the author of this audacious proclamation; a notoriously foul-tempered scavenger known as Beta-Ray Buck conveyed the offer to them.

MOVIE TOWN, CALIFORNIA- The Trader baron "Cardsharp" Chafe is announcing the
founding of a new settlement. Chafe is offering a food allotment and an array of tools for each family willing to make the journey to Bitterwater Mesa for the reclamation and rehabilitation of the recently discovered Vannacutt resort.  The trader is also looking for enterprising folks to act
as guards to escort the new owners along the route, engineers or other technical types to perform any repair that the grounds might need and a scavvie crew to scour the area for any materials that the new community might need.

MEDICINE LODGE, KANSAS- Local scouts have returned from the ruins of Topeka with a waster suffering from extreme exposure and some form of mental instability. After several days in the intensive care of a local sawbones, the man would only repeat the phrase, "They plucked out its milky eye." The doc confided that his patient was covered in small, regularly incisions
inflicted as a form of torture. He was also under the effects of a laboratory grade hallucinogen. Among the waster's possessions is a code-protected electronic data core.

January 10th

NEAR BEAUMONT, TEXAS- Red Feathers, a vagabond gunslinger arrives and has called for a public meeting of the town advisors. He is carrying a message from a small mutie enclave living the Sabine National forests on the north Texas-Louisiana border. The poor muties are suffering under the one-two punch of a withering disease infecting most of their number compounded by
regular assaults by a group of Toxic Shamans and their followers. Red Feathers is offering to organize a posse of healers and fighting folks to try and get the Toxics off the mutant's collective backsides. In return, the tribe is offering the location of an undiscovered oil pumping station, deep
in the forest's heart.

LOST CABIN, WYOMING- Old Deuteronomy, a pacifist member of the Cult of Doom, is looking to assemble a pack of reinforcements for the village of Tower Junction in the old Yellowstone National Park. Old Deuteronomy was mediating between the Junction Guards and a pack of mutants in a dispute over trapper lines when the town was nearly buried in a swift blizzard. The Doomsayer is looking for non-perishable foods and clothing for both the villagers and the mutant tribe.

CASTLE ROCK, SOUTH DAKOTA- Two members of a local scavvie crew have returned to the enclave with some troubling news. While picking through the ruins of the Wyoming State capitol of Cheyenne, the scavengers uncovered a crew of Black Hats supervising the renovation of a wrecked National Guard base. The crew noted that most of the labor is being done by a force of slaves numbering well over fifty, with only twenty or so supervising Hats. The slaves are installing a large number of fuel tanks and heavy machinery. The assumption is that the Combine is starting to build outposts. This may be the first in a series of emplacements as the forces of General Throckmorton start across the country.

ST. LOUIS RUINS, MISSOURI-Andrew Cunningham, Mayor of the Raft City of St. Louis, is logging a report of the sound of automatic gunfire and grenade explosions form somewhere in the western ruins of the city. The townies have little weaponry among them but there are too many civilians to contemplate an evacuation. The mayor is offering a fully reconditioned recreational
watercraft to anyone brave enough to investigate the noise.
