Librarian's Almanac for November, 2000
November 1st

BIG WHISKY, WYOMING- a waster named Nails Nelson relays a second-hand sighting of a Combine Tribute caravan heading south from the wastes in Wyoming.

JUNKYARD, UTAH- A syker that wished to remain nameless reports the rumor that there is a Hellstrome Industry manufacturing plant in the Badlands in Utah. This would give weight to the stories of patrolling robots sighted in the southern reaches of the state.

STRATFORD TOWNSHIP, NORTH TEXAS- Scouts from the Convoy report a very gutsy kidnaping to the Law Dogs. The scouts were leaving Oklahoma, en route to Stratford. Outside of the deserted town of Oxbow they witnessed six heavily armed wasters ambush and capture two Combine Light Combat Cyborgs. Using some odd-looking nets and taser units, the mysterious group rendered the 'borgs into an inoperative state, bound them with thick cable and loaded them on to a heavy truck. The scouts were fired upon with small arms fire when they were discovered observing. The ambushers were spotted heading west towards the New Mexico state border.

BROWNSVILLE REFUGE, SOUTH TEXAS- Trader caravans report a sighting of several large bonfires out on South Padre Island.

ENGINEER'S SOCIETY-APACHE JUNCTION, ARIZONA- Sony Mac, a scout for the township of Globe, Arizona logs a very strange report with the Engineer's Society. The Phoenix Metroplex Ruins have always contained a huge amount of walkin' dead. Over the past three weeks, Mac has noticed that the packs of zombies reported have been smaller and smaller than in the recent past. A quick tally among the junkers comes to the surprising conclusion that there has been a reduction of almost 65% in the number of reported ambulatory corpses. Piper and Sony Mac are curious as to what has happened to the missing zombies.

BUTTE, MONTANA- a lone tractor-trailer reports being fired upon outside of the ruins of Bozeman, Montana by someone piloting a World War I biplane. The attacker was driven off with small arms fire.

November 3rd

OLD MESILLA FORTRESS, NEW MEXICO- a group of wasters arrive with a junker-modified tour bus and an announcement that they will begin attempting regular routes from Tijuana to New Orleans with stops along the way. Fares are negotiable, from bullets to food to mechanical knowledge; just about anything is fair game. Riggs the driver has only one condition; anyone attempting to issue orders to the owners or passengers will be beaten and tossed from the bus. Stopping will be optional.

NEAR BEAUMONT, TEXAS- Law Dogs are asking folks traveling on foot in the area around the Dallas-Fort Worth ruins to be aware of a road hazard. Three different groups have reported an old white package delivery vehicle that has attempted to run down pedestrians along the roadways. There are no descriptions of a driver.

NEAR TUCSON, ARIZONA- A Texarkana Caravan Master named David Silva logs a report with the Librarian about numerous sightings of luminous humanoid figures seen after dusk in the abandoned ruins of Socorro, New Mexico.

November 6th

OLD MESILLA FORTRESS, NEW MEXICO- Judge Fargo the Law Dog logs a report of another strange disfigurement. Night guards in the fortress town found the unconscious form of a large waster in scavenged armor in a state of deep shock. He was nursed back to health and two days later, immediately thrown into the local lock-up. Fargo pointed out that the waster's tattoos identified him as Rictus, the latest in a series of warlords that have been running rampant across the southwestern states. The once fierce warrior is suffering from short-term memory loss and has absolutely no idea why anyone would implant him with a cyberskull.

BLACK KETTLE, OKLAHOMA- A waster called Black Nelson reports in that "High-Dive" Mason has been reported as missing for nearly two weeks. Mason was last seen on a recon mission for some schismatic Doomsayers into the Utah Badlands.

STRATFORD TOWNSHIP, TEXAS- The individual known as the Samaritan has come calling again. The township woke up to a truck bed full of bagged seed. The attached note mentioned that the seed was to be shared and was signed with a large S.

BROWNSVILLE REFUGE, SOUTH TEXAS- Hardcase Borden is a Law Dog with a spot of trouble on his hands. Mutant packs have taken up raiding caravans heading west along the old secondary highways in southern Texas. Curtis would like some friendly types to figure out what is driving the normally peaceful nomadic muties into these rages.

November 9th

SANTA FE FORTRESS, NEW MEXICO- The Silver Nun reports the total destruction of the tiny enclave of Mule Creek, New Mexico. The Librarian Templar happened to chasing down a thieving waster through the area when her Geiger counter sounded off. A careful search of the region uncovered the ruins and they were rendered highly radioactive. Also reported in the area were three different sets of tire tracks, a large number of empty Combine ammo clips and a large number of mutated plants and animals.

LAS CRUCES RUINS, NEW MEXICO- A scout from the Franklin Mountain Enclave arrives with another sighting of the Silent Runner. The gray last century Firebird was seen heading eastward across the Texas deserts. There is still no description of a driver.

MOVIE TOWN, CALIFORNIA- Law Dogs are declaring the small village of Ocotillo Wells off limits for the near future. It seems that the local headman has declared the town to be sealed against all outsiders. There have been a number of reports of people sneaking over the walls into town.

November 16th

FLORENCE, ARIZONA- Law Dogs from four states have issued a proclamation concerning David Cannon, a Law Dog formerly responsible for the southern portions of Arizona. Steel Zachary, James Carpenter, Tony Liddle, Hardcase Curtis, Rob Dixon, and Judge Fargo have reviewed an number of complaints and found Cannon guilty of running a protection racket in a number of survivor settlements in his area of responsibility. The guilty party was threatening to let the towns be overrun with gangers and hostile muties unless he was paid off in food, prime salvage and bullets. Cannon has vanished from his region of responsibility; there is a thousand bullet reward offered for his capture and delivery to the penitentiary in Florence to stand trial.

HOBBS, NEW MEXICO- Schismatic Doomsayers in the western flatlands of Texas report activity around some of the abandoned oil pumps southwest of the Midland-Odessa ruins. The Glow priests were late for a meeting with others of their sect and had no time to investigate.

BROWNSVILLE REFUGE, SOUTH TEXAS- Word arrives that the Franklin Mountain Enclave in El Paso has begun a very audacious undertaking. Librarians, along with any other skilled wasters are invited to the southwestern portion of the Franklin Mountains to the re-opened Community College campus. The group in charge is offering free room and board to those who are willing to pass on workable skills for people to apply to survival. They are also offering prime negotiable pay for those wasters willing to brave the dangers around the old University of Texas campus to scavenge needed equipment and texts for the new center of learning. The obstacles include the nearby Ghost Storm, random toxic whirlwinds, very large radrat packs, veteran walkin' dead, multi-legged albino pumas, and the occasional blast shadow.

October 17th

OLD MESILLA POST HEADQUARTERS, NEW MEXICO- Postal Officers are on the look out for someone out to halt the mail delivery. Six postal workers have returned home to the fortress town with tales of being beaten and robbed by an individual wearing bright crimson powered armor. In two instances, the post worker's vehicle was also destroyed. The Office is offering a substantial reward to anyone who can get to the bottom of things.

BLACK KETTLE, OKLAHOMA- Law Dogs have placed a four hundred round bounty on the head of Yellow Medicine Cloud, a spook from the remains of the Coyote Confederation. The lawmen have over a dozen sworn complaints that Cloud was spotted trying to dump barrels of toxic waste into the water supply for the small enclave of Black Kettle. The spook is considered extremely dangerous.  Three wasters aiming to collect the bounty have turned up dead of asphyxiation, strangulation, and fatal allergic reactions.

SANTA FE FORTRESS, NEW MEXICO- Red Rock Traders from Sedona arrive in the Fortress town bringing word of a mind-boggling bounty: one cubic ton of processed ghost rock in exchange for a very old pair of revolvers.  Specifically, a matched set of Colt Army long-barreled pistols over two hundred years old. Both being of a faded blue steel color; one with an ivory grip with the word GOOD carved in it, the other gripped in ebony ravenwood and bearing an etching of the word EVIL.  Law Dogs are offering a quiet reward of their own to whoever can uncover the patron behind the ghost rock bounty. Scuttlebutt has it that the bounty originated in the upper region of Purgatory. There are stories of a particular gunslinger that roams the regions near the ruins of Seattle. Simone Thunder is said to have a blinding draw with an ancient but well maintained set of revolvers.

NEAR WICHITA, TEXAS- Chains Tanner, a well-known junker/merchant from the Texarkana Bazaar has a wild tale for anyone that will listen. Three nights ago, Tanner was skirting the ruins of Wichita, scouting for salvage when he witnessed a pitched battle between a warband of Anti-Templars and a strange skeletal figure on an otherworldly motorcycle. Chains took up a spying position when he noticed one of the black Templars set up an ambush with a rocket launcher and he figured that some poor sap had just bought the farm.  No one was more surprised than the Anti-Templars when the skeletal figure walked out of the pyre. The junker swears that the creepy biker suddenly leapt nearly forty feet into the middle of the warband and commenced to take names. The show was over in less than a minute with the axe-swingers down faster than a teetotaler drinkin' spook juice. The victorious biker broke each of their axes, stole one of the unconscious warrior's bikes and departed the scene.

NORTHERN CASCADE RANGE- Theodore Howard, a hunter and scout from the ruins of Vancouver reports several trails of four-wheel drive vehicles on old fire roads in the forests near the Seattle ruins. Howard says that there were at least seven different tire patterns, all following something leaving heavy tread tracks.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO- Judge Fargo is announcing the destruction of the survivor settlement in Mogollon. The buildings were covered in bullet holes and there were signs that the townsfolk were involved in a pitched battle with unknown attackers. The town's food depot has been emptied and several homes have been looted.

November 20th

NEW ORLEANS BAYOU, LOUISIANA- Law Dogs are asking for information to the whereabouts of the individual answering to the name of " Data" Simoneaux. The man in question has represented himself as a Librarian but there have been multiple reports and complaints that "Data" is collecting information for some other purpose. Representatives from the Sacramento Library have no such person in their logs. There is speculation that the person is an espionage agent for the Combine. There is a food disbursement for information leading to the capture and arrest of Simoneaux. There is a three hundred round bounty for the person or persons that can deliver the perpetrator to Law Dogs in either New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Near Beaumont.

BROKEN BOW, NEBRASKA- local Law Dogs have failed to receive the usual couriers from the Strongbox in the ruins of the nearby town of Hazard. The Strongbox was a haven and watering hole for the local scavvie crews that worked that region of the Midwest. Built into the top two floors of an old hotel, the Strongbox was reinforced to serve as a shelter from the periodic Hellstorms that would blow in off of the plains. Pete Mathers, the founder, had a strict no fightin' policy that his two mutated Dobermans would enforce. Scouts reported that the entries to the haven were found sealed with some kind of bizarre organic epoxy-like substance. Posses are being formed to try and gain entry.

AUSTIN RECLAMATION ZONE, TEXAS- Amy Harwood, the lead manager of the Austin Reclamation Zone, is putting out a call for mechanically and technically inclined people to come and join her workforce. Harwood has been working for the past year on the project of salvaging the remains of the old Texas State capitol. While the project has put out a decent amount of usable material, Amy has had to face numerous trials. Food shortages, escalating cases of mutations, smaller scavvie crews raiding the storage depots, creatures and mutants in the ruins have all made this an arduous undertaking. Bernie Walton, Harwood's second in charge, has placed an addendum to the call: any person skilled with fighting or a gun will be given a share of the haul in exchange for guard duty.

TEXARKANA BAZAAR, TEXAS- Trader Barons in the north Texas mercantile market have publicly announced the first physical description of the mysterious individual called the Samaritan. Two days ago, one of the bazaar merchants accused a visiting Syker of attempted thought control during a heated haggling session. The accused went berserk and began blastin' the merchant's shop and immolated a few passers-by. Over a dozen witnesses testified to the local Law Dogs that a small feminine figure in unassuming waster attire vaulted out of the crowd and pistol-whipped the enraged Syker into submission with an old Mac-10 machine pistol. What made things odd was the scarlet silken mask that concealed the hero's features as well as the purple S left on the Syker's head with a permanent marker. The Samaritan kept the crowd back from the perpetrator until the Law Dogs arrived to assume custody and then promptly vanished into the buildings around the Bazaar.
