"How I Stabilized The PA-2012 Rev 1.2 Mobo To Run The AMD K6-2 366MHz and AMD K6-III 400MHz CPUs"

Home Page

What's New

May 8, 2000 - XOOM's server hosting my homepage has been down for at least 2 weeks now. Luckily I created a mirror site on GeoCities last month ..... or maybe it was because I created this mirror site! ;^)
Anyway, to I've re-routed the popular
http://surf.to/ga586hx address to point to this mirror site. Of course you can still use these URLs as well :-

April 19, 2000 - Over time, I've received a number of e-mails saying that my homepage could not be accessed. This has been due to XOOM's servers being down. To avoid these problems, I've set up a mirror site at Yahoo!'s Geocities. I don't know if Geocities will be any better than XOOM, but hopefully they won't be both down at the same time! ;^)

January 11, 2000 - A patch is needed when using USB with Win98SE and AMD CPUs on VIA chipset mobos. See this Microsoft page for more info and downloads :-

What?

The PA-2012 is a motherboard made by FIC. It is a VIA Apollo VP3 board that officially supports up to the AMD K6-233. It has a switching voltage regulator that can provide both linear and dual voltages. It supports clock multiplier of 1.5x to 5.5x, and bus frequency of 60MHz, 66MHz, and 75MHz.

Why?

I guess it had to happen sooner or later.

A friend of mine, who read my homepage, introduced me to her boss. He owns a small business which uses 6 PCs. Of these, 4 contained the PA-2012 mobo coupled with the AMD K6-200 CPU. The company was experiencing some growth and required higher-end software. Of course, more powerful software means more powerful hardware. So he was considering upgrading all the PCs, and he was thinking of the Pentium !!! 400 or 500. But this would be a heavy investment per PC with upgrades of CPUs, BX mobos and PC-100 RAM. Even the cheaper Celeron would also require new mobos and RAM.

My friend told him about my successes with the GA-586HX and AP5T-3, and he asked me to do the same for his PA-2012 PCs. After some study of the PA-2012, I agreed ... at a price of course.

I was finally going to profit from all this mobo hacking and enhancing! ;^)
