**McIvor
Times Friday June 12, 1868 , "Fatal Accident by Drowning"
"A very painful and distressing
occurrence took place on the 4 inst., by which two fine children, Ellen
and Annie Furze, the elder twelve and the younger nine years of age, daughters
of Mr Henry Furze of Goulburn River, lost their lives. They were amusing
themselves by paddling a bark canoe on a lagoon near Mr Furze's residence,
when it upset and both were precipitated into the water and drowned before
assistance could be rendered."
This is where Henry and his family lived in Victoria - from Post
Office Directories and Books of Local history and newspapers
"Burra Murra" The avenue of oaks leading up to site
of the farmhouse bought/built by Henry 1865 - note vineyard on left
now- you can purchase wine labelled "BURRAMURRA" . This wonderful label
has a copy of the first Australian bank note which depicts Goulburn Weir.
Amongst the ruins of Burra Murra farmhouse- cellar hole in foreground
The foundations were clearly the outline of a house overlooking the
Goulburn lake which would have been a view across fields to the river.
The house was made of red bricks - very few left now. This photo shows
part of what some of us believe to be a big bay-window area of curved foundations.

*The Free Press cessation is referred to in the Kilmore Examiner 17 Jan 1865 saying Mr Furzes' printing plant had been hurriedly removed to John Kelly Trainors premises " with law proceedings likely to arise".
The Examiner 26
March 1865 says "The Free Press has quietly reappeared, now in
the safe hands of Thomas Hunt instead of Mr Furze after going out of existence
9 or 10 weeks ago."
No known copy of the
Furze era Free Press papers exist.
It seems Henry Furze
was called "Big Spark" by the editor of the The McIvor Times who
denigrated and opposed his editorial articles.
