bullet Arthur Thomas Clapham(1) was born on 22 Jan 1871 in Sedgwick Co, KS. He died on 26 Dec 1942 in Persimmon, OK. He was buried in Persimmon Cemetery, Mutual, OK. . "President Grover Cleveland authorized the fourth Oklahoma land opening known as the Cherokee Outlet. This `run' took place on September 16, 1893. Arthur Thomas Clapham left Kansas and came to Oklahoma Territory in 1895. He purchased a quarter section of unbroken ground one and one-half miles east of the town of Persimmon. He paid seventy-five dollars for the land. The town of Persimmon was short lived and in a few years was moved two miles east to be located on a railroad which was under construction. The town was re-named Mutual.
In 1896, Arthur returned to Kansas and married Addie Sibel. Addie (the daughter of John Henry and Martha Jane Brant) was born near Iowa City, Iowa, on November 13, 1879. She moved with her parents to Garden Plain, Kansas in 1892. Arthur and Addie were married in Goodard, Kansas.
Arthur and Addie left Kansas in January of 1897 for the land in Oklahoma. They traveled in a covered wagon pulled by a four horse team. When they crossed the North Canadian River, Arthur rode one of the lead horses and broke the ice with a pole. The town of Woodward was a tent city and the main street was lined with saloons. Arthur and Addie lived in their wagon the rest of that winter. The wagon was complete with a four-lid topsy stove andd a bake oven in the stovepipe. He plowed thirty acres of sod in the spring and planted it to corn. Times were difficult and there was nothing to spare. Once when Arthur shot a couple of quail, Addie was not certain that she she should prepare both for one meal. He put his arm around her and told her, `I think we can splurge this once.'
Arthur's parents (Milton and Amelia) came to Oklahoma Territory in 1897 with the rest of their family. They lived with Arthur while Milton built his house on a farm two miles west and one-half mile south of Persimmon. William (a brother to Arthur) purchased Milton's farm in 1906 and Milton built a home in the new town of Mutual. He purchased the pre-cut materials for the home from Sears and Roebuck.
Arthur and Addie had six children. The firstborn, on August 3, 1897 was Pluma Alcora. That same year Arthur built a one room house, dug a well, and in the fall planted fifty acres of wheat. There were still a few Indians who wandered about, and one, upon seeing Pluma in her crib, remarked that she was a `pretty papoose'.
Bessie Zannie was born on November 26, 1898 and Royce Douglas on June 13, 1900.
During the next few years, Arthur broke the rest of the sod (except for thirty acres he left for pasture), built outbuildings, erected a windmill, and fenced his farm. He built a new house in 1904, rented his farm in 1905 and moved to Curtis where he manged a hardware store. Here Berta Grace was born on June 23, 1906. The following year he moved to Mooreland and Gordon Carmen was born on October 31, 1907. Oklahoma became a state on November 16th of the same year. Arthur moved his family back to his farm in the early summer of 1908. The last child, Marcella, was born on June 9, 1910. He added on to the house that he built in 1904 and more than doubled its size.
Milton lived the rest of his life in Mutual and died on June 13, 1931. Amelia preceded him in death on March 15, 1929. Both are buried in Persimmon Cemetery west of Mutual.
Arthur died on December 26, 1942. Addie lived on alone in Mutual and spent the rest of her life caring for her many grandchildren. Most noteworthy was the care and love that she gave to two of Gordon's children. They both suffered from Down Syndrome and required an enormous amount of time and caring. On occasion they would spend two or three months at a time with her. She devoted her final years to caring for and loving them. Addie died on March 19, 1968 and is buried in Persimmon Cemetery."
