Early data on Jesse Leonard obtained by interview of Bula (Martin) Leonard by Lula (Eads) Morrow. Jesse worked for Wilbanks and Pierce, Inc. Dredging Contractors from 1930 to Sept. 24th 1933 in New Madrid, MO. From James Theodore Leonard's birth Certificate: the state that the father (Jessie Leonard) was born in says Miss. On his marriage Certificate, at the age of 24 Years Jessie is listed as being of Leachville in the county of Mississippi and of the state of Arkansas. From research done by Ted Leonard: On 1910 Census- Union County Mississippi: Jesse Blackard is listed as the adopted child of John Leonard and Harriet. He is 11 Yrs. old, no place of birth for him or parents. John Leonard born in Illinios, father NC, and mother Missouri Harriet no children born or living, no place of birth, parents born in Georgia. On 1900 Census- Union County Mississippi: Jesse is listed as 2 yrs old living with and grandson of Napoleon and Alice Blackard. Napoleon born in 1858 MS. 42 yrs old, married 22 years Napoleon's wife Allice born 1862 MS. 38 yrs old married 22 yrs, had 8 children with 8 living. There are 8 children listed plus Jesse Birne listed as GSon. The only way for him to have been a grandson is for one of the 8 children listed to have been the parent (that is if he was indeed a grandson.) Since Jesse is listed with last name of Bernie, this points to one of Napoleons' daughters. Napoleon has 4 daughters ages 18, 10, 5, and 2. This would translate to ages of 16, 8, and 3 at the time of Jesse birth. The 18 year old is Sarah L. Blackard born June 1882 in MS. Also on Sarah's marriage status column it is neither S for single or M for married, but an unidentifiable mark. In the number of years married column, there is a 0 and what looks like the 0 was marked out. In the number of children, born and living, it is blank. Jesse Birne is listed as being born in MS and both parents born MS. See Napoleon's family for whole family listing. From Obituary in the Clarksville Newspaper. Obtained in research by Dewight Morrow for the Leonard family. Jesse L. Leonard Jessie L. Leonard, 45, died Sunday afternoon, June 3, in the Clarksville Municipal Hospital, from burns received May 23 in a mine accident. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Silby Wallis, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetary with the Hardwicke Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Leonard, an employee of the Arkansas Stripping Company, moved to Clarksville from Little Rock a year ago. He is survived by his wife; and one son, James T. Leonard, Little Rock. (END) As told to Doug Leonard by Jess's son James Theodore Leonard: His dad was "digging close to or over an area of ground that was not known to be burning underneath it when it collapsed and him and his machine falling in." I am thinking it was a coal mine. According to James T. "JT" Leonard " I can still remember hearing my dad screaming all night long in the hospital from down the hall - it was horrible."
