Living in Chitwan

Here are some information to help you understand what you should expect of a village life in Chitwan once you decide to participate in one of our programs.

The road to Chitwan

The volunteer must send the application or expression of interest by email to the International Coordinator (We try to avoid the application process via postal mail because it takes longer and sometimes mail delivery is uncertain). Then, when HHCN receives the date of arrival from you, HHCN will send you the orientation document which is very important and useful for planing your experience in Nepal. When you arrive in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, an HHCN representative will be at the airport to greet you. You will spend the first night in a Kathmandu hotel. Second day, you and the representative will take a five-hour bus ride to Narayanghat (a major town in Chitwan) where you will spend another night in hotel. On the third day, HHCN members will give you a thorough orientation and afterward, will take you to your host family in the village.

Nepali Language

Nepali is the national language of Nepal. Intensive one-week Nepali language course is also offered by HHCN for $75US. Nepali language teacher, selected by HHCN, will design the class to meet your language need, particularly to fit your volunteer program. Nepali language class can be very helpful for volunteers but we only recommend it.

Host Family

HHCN will provide the volunteer with a clean bedroom in the Nepalese host family. The host family speaks Nepali and a little English. Host family is strictly chosen by the organization. There is electricity, however, there is no plumbing. A pump provides the water and the toilet is an "outhouse" on the property. The volunteer will have to boil the water for drinking, but the host family will enjoy doing it for their guest. All meals will be provided by the host family and will consist primarily of rice, vegetables and lentil soup. This is the standard meal throughout Nepal, called "dal bhat tarkari", and it's eaten twice a day, around 10 o'clock in the morning and 7 o'clock in the evening. Early in the morning and at the end of afternoon, a tea is also served every day. All theses accommodations are included in the monthly US $350. Also, note that there is a wide variety of fruits available as well as small village stores where snacks can be purchased (if the volunteer is not used to taking only two meals a day).
