Congratulations class of 2002.  95.3% passed the New York State English Regents Exam.
Class of 2003, are you ready to beat that?  Then read the books!   They will make you smart.

RE: THE connection

Welcome, class of 2003.   You need to pass my class to graduate.  That is THE  most basic connection between what I ask of you and how it applies to your lives.   There are many other connections, but we will get to them in class.  Bottom line:  there is a reason why the NYS Board of Regents revised and raised the standards for English before any other subject:  IT IS THE BASIS OF ALL OTHER SUBJECTS.  You are not allowed to disagree with that statement until June, 2003, and even then, be sure you develop a cogent argument.

RE: Honors status

Welcome, guinea pigs...I mean...honor students.  You have been selected for this class because of your grades AND your interest in literature.  Theoretically, this eliminates the need for the usual start-of-the-year barrage of  DYRT quizzes.  I say theoretically for two reasons: 1) This is MCS's 1st year with an honors program, and 2) I have never seen this theory tested (Bonus: Is this irony or a lame pun?).  I'm young (if you laugh, you fail) and inexperienced at teaching a group with such elite status.   Bottom line:  Ace the quizzes, prove the theory, and then we can move on.  Disprove the theory, and we drop the "honors" from English 11.
Email if you would like to persuade me to take a different approach.  All attempts will fail, but you more masochistic types may enjoy trying.

DO NOT place assignments here.  If you do, your work will likely be obliterated in the paper vortex.  In fact, you are better off avoiding this room altogether.  Chances are, your class will not meet here.
