South Mountain State Park Casar, NC |
Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 From: Rob Thompson Dearly Departed: I was pleaseantly surprised to see in the June 1997 issue of Runner's World, in an article entitled "Off the Beaten Path", p.73, a description of South Mountain State Park in North Carolina as a trail running destination. South Mountain State Park is an old friend of mine. Years ago, in my fly-fishing days, I spent many a summer morning there practicing my technique on the hatchery stocked lower waters of Jacob's Fork Creek. Many the rainbow trout succumbed to my onslot of grasshopper, ant, and imitator flys. Many the tree claimed a fly on a back cast. One tends to buy or tie a lot of flies or quickly learn to roll cast. (Note that there's no harm in harvesting hatchery stocked fish - they wouldn't survive past the summer anyhow).
Since starting to run again, I realized the trails and paths of the park would make a good trail running site. It offers fairly well groomed and shadded dirt and gravel trails that climb up and down the park's collection of 2000 ft wooded hills - a nice waterfall too. I even purchased a pair of trail running shoes a few weeks ago, with South Mountain in mind. Now I've got the opportunity to use them at a place made famous by Runner's World :-) There may even be grilled trout for dinner :-) Rob Thompson thom339@ibm.net South Mountain is one of North Carolina's largest state parks with a major emphasis on wilderness activities. There are 29 miles of bridle trails are open to runners. The loop trail is strenuous and runners should be in good shape before attempting it. You can run the Dogwood Trail past Benn Knob, the highest peak in the park at 2,894 feet.
