The Bike

In 2000 I started out racing on a 15 year old Yamaha two-stroke RZ350 streetbike converted to racing specs and, although old, she was a competent and competitive road racing machine.    Probably one of the most fun sportsman class bikes you can find; afterall, it carried me to two amateur regional championships in lightweight and middleweight sportsman in my first year of racing!

If you're thinking of racing an RZ, be sure to contact Gary Stumm of MRA Racing in Florida. Click on the racing picture below to have a glimpse (a mpeg file) of what racing is like at LRRS from a spectator's point of view.

The RZ carried me from running 1:32 in my first race to achieving my goal of running 1:26s at the end of my first season.

Accu-Products Racing Yamaha TZ250

Through last season I raced true GP bike -- a 1993 Yamaha TZ250: 80 HP, 220 pounds...a real 600 killer. The TZ took some getting used to, as the power range is much more narrow and the light-switch effect of the power coming on can get you out of shape in a real hurry.

It also bumped me to a much faster class and put me against the newest and fastest 600s available today. The capability of this bike is nothing short of amazing, however, as it will take you around corners faster than you ever thought you could go.

The key is to keep your corner speed up and make your passes coming into the turns.

I've now moved to a 2004 KTM 525SMR (supermoto racer). The bike is a real blast. About 240lbs and 60 rwhp means it really rips in the lighweight classes and believe it or not it really handles well around a road race course. I'm having a blast on it!.
