Michael Cain had eight children all born in Yackandandah to his wife Bridget Mary Meehan. Two of those eight children are listed on your website along with other families to other wives, as far away from Yackandandah as Hawthorn, Richmond, Sandhurst & Chewton. There is just no way that Michael could have done all that travel on foot or on horseback. The same year that he married Bridget Mary Meehan in Beechworth Michael Cain is listed as having a child in Sandhurst to another woman, Bridget Murphy, actually wife of a 2nd Michael Cain. That is followed by one of the correct entries, his daughter Bridget, born & died 1856 at Yackandandah. Michael Cain of Yackandandah's next four children are missing & replaced by a John Cain born to yet another Michael Cain (now the 3rd Michael Cain) in Richmond. One of Michael Cain of Yackandandah's missing children was born the same year, 1862, as one of the inserted entries, a Catherine Cain born to the 3rd Michael Cain in Richmond. Then the Margaret listed in 1866 is not the Margaret who was born at Yackandandah, so that birth entry is wrong, but it is tied to a correct entry for the Margaret Cain born at Yackandandah really did marry John Mongan (great work on the Mongans by the way, unflawed by this type of error.

You were half right when you said "surname changes with each child", but you were referring to the wife's surname only. That's why I say "half right". Certainly Meehan also gets recorded as Mahon & meagher by registrars unable to understand Bridget Mary Cain nee Meehan's Irish accent. But if you check out the other half of the story, the husband's side, you will find that Cain also gets spelt many ways, & that if you only look up Cain entries in the indexes you will get a lucky dip of children from the three different Michael Coins. If you check the other spelling's for the husband's name you will find that Michael Cain of Yackandandah was born Kean, migrated to Australia as Kain (not 1854 as stated, that may be one of the other Michael Cains), married as Cine (I suppose that replicates the Kean or Keane variations), had his older children born as Cain, the middle children born as Cane & I am still looking for the younger children whose names I obtained from the family.

My Great Grandfather was Henry Patrick Rust Catt b: 1845 m: 1868 d: 1904 who married Maria Ellen Mahoney b: 1850 d: 1903 the parents of Henry Catt who married Harriett Jessup.
My Grandfather Charles Patrick Catt b: 16 Jul 1875 d: 28 Jul 1940 married 1908 to Catherine Ryan b: 12 Jan 1886 d: 2 Aug 1957 was the brother of Henry Catt b: 1871 m: 1894 d: 1901 who married Harrriett Jessup b: 1875 d: 1955. There were two other siblings to Henry and they are Fredrick Ignatius b:1887, d:1897 and Cathererine Emma b:1889, d: 1894.

Harriet Catt born 1896 at Kew married Daniel John Reid in 1922 #9653 at Burnley. Her parents Henry and Harriet (Jessup) Henry's occupation Plumber. Harriet and Daniel had no children but did adopt a male child. Possibly still living. Daniel John Reid was my husband's Great Uncle.
