Notes for ROBERT COAD:

He is listed at the Archives Office of Tasmania in the convict indents as having arrived aboard the "Waterloo" on the 2nd March 1835. All 224 convicts who embarked in England were landed in Hobart (Bateson, 1959,P.389).
The "Waterloo" had been built at Bristol in 1815 and this was its fourth trip as a convict transport. Its master was Jn.Cros and its surgeon George Roberts. It sailed from Portsmouth on the 20th November 1834 and took 103 days for the voyage (Bateson,1959 _P.362-3). Surgeon's report, dirty habits and Idle.
Robert received his conditional pardon in March 1845 (AOT CON/31/7).
Marriage Registration No553. Lists Robert as being 28, a bachelor with a ticket of leave.

Comment - Robert was called '23' when he was described on arrival in 1835 (born in 1812). The hard life of being a convict for 10 years aged him to '28' in 1845. When he died in 1863 he was '48' - Victoria speeded up his ageing by 2 years.

Robert's age is listed as 48 years. An inquest was held after Robert's death. His son was the informant and was living at Chinaman's Flat. Robert is said to have lived in Victoria for 10 years and 18 years in Tasmania before that.

Death Cause; in the inquest, Robert died the day after he fell from his dray after a wheel was stuck in a rut and he was thrown off the cart. 19th April 1863 PROCEEDINGS of Inquest held Upon the body of Robert Coad at Dead Bullock Gully in the district of Maryborough.

DEPOSITION OF WITNESS - Henry????.....

On his oath saith as follows: I am a laborer and was in the employ of deceased----------on ?? day afternoon last-about half past five o'clock I was sitting with him on his dray which was loaded with stones- Deceased was driving- on the road about six miles from here the off wheel of the dray got into a rut and deceased fell off the dray and the wheel passed over his body. The weight stone on the dray would be about 30 cwt. Immediately after the accident deceased asked to be taken home and said" I'm done" I took him home. Dr Benson saw him. He died yesterday morning about 11 0'clock from the injuries caused by the dray passing over him

His Henry + Ir Mark

CORONERS INQUEST - DEPOSITION OF WITNESS : John Robinson Benson

On his oath saith as follows: I am legally qualified to practice medicine in this... and Investigation at Maryborough.

On Saturday night last at about nine o'clock I was requested to visit deceased. I went to his tent and found....broken on the left side and the collar bone on the right side. He was perfectly sensible and sober. He told me that he was riding home on his dray which was loaded with stones and that he fell off and the dray passed over his body and caused the injuries of which he died. There is no doubt the loaded dray passing over the body caused the accident. I saw him once after the first time and saw his case was a hopeless one. He died shortly after I saw him the second time of the effects pro... by the injuries to the chest

John, son of Robert, born in Tasmania

John was born in New Norfolk,Tasmania, 1843, the same year that his parents, Prudence Burrows and Robert Coad, were married. His father had just received his permission to marry and his ticket of leave. He probably grew up near the Burrows family who owned land at Bridgewater and Glenorchy as his brothers Richard and William were born there in 1847 and 1852. The Coad family possibly moved to the goldfields of Victoria at Maryborough about the time his sister Maria was born in 1856.

His mother is recorded as having come on the City of Hobart. A mine record reports John as having had an accident in a mine around this period. A further two sisters were born, Emma in St Arnaud, 1858 and Selina at White Hills in 1861.

In 1863 John reported the accident of his father who died when he fell from a cart loaded with stones which passed over him. He was possibly then living at Chinaman's Flat.

John was married to Sarah Swinton in 1876 and had a son, John Robert who only lived for a short time. Sarah also died. In 1887 at the Presbeterian Manse in Maryborough he was married to Elizabeth Enderby nee Burns. He was listed as a miner at St Arnaud. Alfred was born in Alma or Alma St, Maryborough in 1888.
Before 1900 John and his family moved to Chiltern where he worked on the gold mines.
He died in 1926 at Beechworth Asylum and is buried in the cemetery in that town. His son, Alfred, had a headstone put on his site in the 1950's.
