Odd little side comment - Walter McAlpine was the clergy man who wrote a report on Culross, in 1791-99.
Walter McAlpine Drysdale was baptised 29 July 1821 at Culross, Perthshire, son of John Drysdale and Margaret Scotland. There are no other entries.
Margaret Gay born 27 June 1812 and baptised 5 July 1812, is a daughter of John Gay and May Brown, at Kinross, Kinrosshire, Scotland. May Brown married John Guy 22 Dec 1799. Other children are Janet 9 Feb 1801, Mary 13 Mar 1803, James 14 July 1805, John 18 Oct 1807, David 29 Oct 1809, Jean 24 Jul 1814 and Andrew 6 Oct 1816.

Hello,
I am writing from California. My husband Lee is from Bathurst NSW. He is descended from John Gay (Guy) and May Brown through their daughter Mary, born 1803. Mary would be older sister to your Margaret.

Mary Gay married James Dow and their son Robert Dow married Janet McLaren. Robert's son David Dow marrie Agnes Hunter Ford in 1883 and they emigrated to Australia probably about 1887-88. So I was very interested to find your Margaret Gay and Walther Drysdale going to Tasmania in 1857. Perhaps our lot heard about your lot and decided to try things out in Australia. They settled in Lithgow, NSW.

Margaret's sister Mary Gay died at Kinross on December 11, 1883 at the age of 80. Her parents are listed as John Gay (handloom weaver, deceased) and May Gay (maiden surname Brown, deceased).

Thanks for making your information available -
Regards, Cheryl

Margaret's headstone has recently (letter dated Oct 2002) been found in an old Scottish cemetery in Hobart, and it records that she died 11 Nov 1862 aged 48 years. This suggests she was 4 years older than stated on the shipping list.

Your question, "--do you have more on Edwin?' No--but let me give you an interesting story. My grandmother, Elizabeth Lucy Anne Wilson, was born in British Columbia, Canada in 1879 to John (b.1836 Cornwall) /Hannah Southcombe. Sometime in her teens she went by boat to Tasmania (this would be in the 1890's) supposedly to go to school (there was a real shortage of suitable girls schools in BC at that time--it was still fairly primitive). She apparently attended a school in Dover near Hobart. Apparently the arrangements were made by an Ed Wilson (married to a Marjory) who lived in that area. While there she went on a boating trip with them in the South Seas. The whole concept of the trip to Tasmania is quite amazing considering the dates and distances. My grandmother had returned to BC well before she married my grandfather in 1904.
Now to the Ed (Edmund or Edwin--but probably the latter) Wilson. I know little about him but could surmise that he is the son of Henry the 1/2 brother to John. Both Henry and John are the sons of Isaac. Isaac, if family lore is to be believed, had a house in perpetuity in England (as long as some Wilson stayed in it) but obviously they all left. Isaac was supposed to have lived to 104, married at least twice, and had been in the RN from whence came the grant of the house.
So you can see why I feel that the Edwin/Marjory Drysdale may be connected. I also found that the name of their child, Edwin Charles, perpetuates the name of the father and of Charles Wilson (probably a brother of Edwin's) who came from Tasmania, died, and is buried in the family plot in Chilliwack, BC.
Thanks for your interest. We live in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada.
