Holland

From on Tue, 3 Aug 2004

Hi
In some of my family research my ancestors Alfred & Lucy Holland and their son Harold came out to Australia sailing on the Omega from Southampton 3/6 /1856 arriving Geelong 16/9/1856. So did the Twiggs.

I wonder if they had a chat on the ship? Probably. Anyway thought I would let you know and ask if you had any other info. on the voyage? My ancestors settled in Strathfieldsaye near Bendigo and also in Marong.

The internet said Book 12 page 203 for Alfred (30) Harold (1) & Lucy (20) Holland, September 1856.
--------------
I replied
Hi,
I have looked at the Freebmd for UK for the wedding of Alfred Holland and Lucy - no match

So I looked at the Diggers Victoria to 1888 and found Lucy Vernon and Alfred twice called Alfred Joslin Holland

So went to http://www.familysearch.org/
and entered Holland Alfred range 10 years around 1825 and found

Alfred Joslin Holland Birth: 07 Dec 1824 Christening: 07 Jul 1825 Independent, Bocking, Essex, England Father: John Holland Mother: Mary

Is this what you have? I see that when Alfred died in 1887 the family did not know who his mother was - put Lucy instead.

---------------------
Two births
Lucy Vernon Christening: 21 Jan 1831 Bromsgrove, Worcester, England Father: George Croft Vernon Mother: Mary Elizabeth
---------------
Lucy Vernon Christening: 27 Feb 1836 Saint John And Saint Martin, Beverley, Yorkshire, England Father: William Vernon Mother: Margaret
------------
If she was 20 in 1856, the birth in 1836 fits.
Looking at next evidence, the names of her children, one called George, second daughter called Mary Margaret. First daughter has Margaret as second name. Third son has William as second name

But Mary is also Albert's mother's name, so ? Hope her death entry clarifies this little puzzle.

Thankyou for writing.
This sort of thing is my daily joy.
--------------
Dear Elizabeth,
I cannot thank you enough, I am only learning how to do all this and you have solved some big puzzles in a week that has taken me over a year to still not solve!

The Beverley Yorkshire Lucy is the one! You have really made my day and I will be distributing the information you found to all the family. I hope my ancestors maybe helped yours on the Omega with something and it is karma returning!
Regards,
Grant
