on 6 Dec 2008 Item of interest. George Hemley was convicted of stealing two sheep (along with a colleague). George was deported to Australia (court records of trial and sentence have recently been seen by a descendant, in a court house in Bedford.) After serving a sentence of about 7 years he returned to England and married Eliza Chandler, then 16 years old.

George Hemley aged 20 on 20th December 1839 charged with assault, he is described as 5 ft 5 inches, brown hair, hazel eues, with round face, born at Billington in Bedfordshire

Lois Bowden in a Rootsweb item dated 19 Sep 1998 states
George HEMLEY was born 21 May 1818 and Eliza CHANDLER was born 1838. They were married in London on 4th January 1854. They were married at the Parish Church of England in the parish of St. Leonard Shoreditch. George was the son of William HEMLEY and Priscilla MACKSFIELD. Other children of William and Priscilla were Hannah, Thomas, James, Priscilla and David. George and Eliza had 15 children. George and Eliza sailed to Australia from London on the OTTILLIA arriving at the Port of Melbourne on 28th July 1854. Lots of convict information to follow for anyone researching this family.
