Mansergh

From on Friday, 2 January, 2009

Hello Elizabeth
Noticed your posting and I have some info from my line on Emily Hammersley married to Francis Mansergh.
Emily was born Feb. 1, 1817 in Ballyhane, Tipperary the daughter of Captain Daniel Hammersley who was born Circa 1789 and died Nov. 20, 1839 and his wife Mary Kissane. Emily had another sister Elizabeth born Sept. 7,1815.
Captain Daniel was one of 15 children born to John Hammersley born circa 1715 in Ballinard and his wife Margaret Gabbett of Croom. John Hammersley died circa 1777. John Hammersley was the son of John Hammersley of Cullen who was born circa 1690 and was married to Elizabeth Chadwick of Cullen.
I notice you have the death date of Emily Hammersley as 1870. I would appreciate any info you may have on her so that I may add this to my family tree. Hope you find the above info interesting.
Kindest regards. Robert Ryan In Bayonne, New Jersey U.S.A.

Mitchell

From on Wed, 8 Nov 2006

I am not sure about which ship Phillip Mitchell arrived. I have been to Public Records Office of Victoria, and it looks like the Phillip on the "Star of the East" is him. He is listed separately from the other Mitchell's on the ship and his age and occupation are about right. His wife, Maria Ellen nee Penrose, arrived with their daughter, Mary, on the "Eastern City" in 1855. Phillip also had a brother, Richard, who emigrated to Australia with his wife and son in 1857 on the "Mary Ann".

The Star Of The East came Sep 1854 with Alex Mitchell 9, Margaret Mitchell 50, Wm Mitchell 50, Js Mitchell 41, James Mitchell 13, Philip Mitchell 22, Js Mitchell 24 (3 or 4 separate groups)
The Mary Ann came Jan 1857 with William Mitchell Infant, Richard Mitchell 21, David Mitchell 23, Elizabeth Mitchell 20 and Mary Mitchell 18
The Eastern City came Aug 1857 with Mary Mitchell, Jas Mitchell 18 and Ellen Mitchell 24

Dear Elizabeth
Philip Mitchell and Maria Ellen Penrose married June quarter 1853 Truro 5c 333. The information on Maria Ellen's listing only has 33 with one number missing as the original is a poor copy. Parents for Maria Ellen Penrose are Paul Penrose and Elizabeth Tredinnick, so you have the right family on the 1851 census.
The parents of Phillip Mitchell are William Mitchell and Mary Glasson.
In the 1851 Census they are listed in Folio 611 Page 29 number 100 at the Cornwall search page.

The first family in Victoria, Australia, was John Mylrea and Alice Warren, who lived in the Wimmera area, north of Portland Bay, in 1846 when William was born, then moved to Port Fairy, and later Lexton. They were married 1853 #23849, at the Church of England, Christ Church, Geelong, five years after their eldest two children were Christened by the Presbyterian minister for Pyrenees & Port Fairy. Few clergy ventured into the outer reaches of Port Phillip, with Melbourne just declared a city, and the county still 8 years to separation from New South Wales.

In Response To: Re: MYLREA surname (Brett Reynolds)
Interested in Mylrea surname, & in particular a William Mylrea on the Isle of Man who married Isabella about 1812. She was the widow of Stephen Cowley and her maiden name was Corkhill. William and Isabella had 2 sons and 2 daughters including Edward Mylrea born in Liverpool in 1835. Isabella later emigrated to Australia with Edward, and a married daughter in 1858. A son from her first marriage, William Cowley was already in Australia. A nephew, John Mylrea married to Alice Warren was also already in Australia. I think William Mylrea's father was a John Mylrea and that William was born on the Isle of Man. Can anyone add anything to any of this?

Emily Garland 1805 - 1873 #2267 aged 68 dau of Elizabeth Jones and William Garland came c1856 from Spain with Frederick Thomas Mylrea 1803 - 1862 #9216 aged 59 son of Sophia Bozeley and Daniel Mylrea born in London

From on Saturday, 20 September, 2008

I'm writing a book about John Mylrea and you're right - he was a shepherd, but at Decameron in 1846 when William was born and then at Woodstock when Isabella was born. He went on to own the Lexton Hotel before going to Qld and becoming quite a significant pastoralist.
I'd be very keen to know about the John Mylrea who was living at Port Fairy in 1848, and any other info you come across in the Mylrea vein. At this stage, I'm still trying to figure out WHEN he arrived in Australia and if he came with someone - such as an uncle. He was very young to have come alone.
