I have just found a posting from you regarding the Tuttlebys of Essex. My 3 x great grandmother was Susannah Barnes m. James Mills, a sister to Philadelphia Barnes/Tuttleby/Brown.
In her will Susannah wrote "I give and bequeath unto my sister Philadelphia Brown of Stamford described(?) on the Mill in the County of Essex the legacy or sum of twenty pounds and also all my wearing apparel." (12 July 1850)
I have had a letter today from the keeper of the Essex marriage index who verified that Philadelphia Burns(sic) married William Tuttleby on 20 Oct 1811 in Fobbing and then married James Brown on 15 March 1840 also in Fobbing. For her second marriage, Philadelphia Tuttleby is a widow, father John Barnes.

Hi Elizabeth.
I was reading your website that mentions the Tuttlebys of Melbourne, Australia. I am descended from Henry and Mary Tuttleby who emigrated on the ship Sacramento in 1853. I thought I'd let you know that according to the medical notes on the passenger list, their daughter Alice died on the voyage, and that's why she's not mentioned in any documents in Australia.

I am descended from his daughter, his eldest child, Mary Tuttleby, who migrated with the family in 1853 when she was 13.
Mary married my gggrandfather, Samuel Hamilton, in Campbellfield, Melbourne in 1858, and they had 17 children!!
I didn't have much information about Henry's parents at all, apart from the fact they were Philadelphia (nee Barnes) and William. So I was pleased to get Sue's email.

The Sacramento came Apr 1853 with 245 Assisted British Immigrants including the Tuttleby family - Henry 38, Mary 37, Mary 13, Henry 3 and Alice 1
Mary Hockley wed Sep 1837 at Orsett, Essex, Vol 12 page 223 to Henry Tuttleby - Freebmd has a transcription problem, so the names appear singly.

Henry Tittleby is the spelling for Henry's death

Alfred Ernest Tuttleby (born 1889 in Collingwood, registered in Victoria #18746) is actually my Great Grandfather. He married Sophia Meddows (born 1888, registered in Victoria #27385 in 1903) in 1907 in Collingwood (registered in Victoria #4672). They had three children as follows:
