on the 21 July, 1998, placed this family in the FirstFamilies2001 web site. I have written to her, and her Email address is still valid, to express our appreciation of her hard work.

She writes:-
James Whiteside was born 1809 at Tyrone Ireland and died 1875 aged 66 at South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He wed c1844 to Catherine Connolly, born 1821 at Roscommon, Ireland and died 4 September 1855 aged 34 at Adelaide, South Australia.

James married for a second time in Adelaide to Ellen Graham, on 14th December 1857
Marriages Registered in the District of Adelaide No 2972 of 1857. Trinity Church. James Whiteside Gold digger aged 42 of George Street son of Joseph Whiteside, wed Ellen Graham aged 27 of George Street daughter of Cornelius Graham. Both parties signed the register and witnessed by JA Hamiton storeman of Norman Street & Mary Maher by her mark,of Norman Street.

James came 1828 to Port Jackson on the Mellish and Catherine came 1837 to Port Jackson on the Diamond, both sent as Convicts and assigned to the Bathurst area of N.S.W.

29 / 913. Convict list as per ship " Mellish" Master Vincent.

22 / 686 Ticket of Leave. 26 July 1844.

Muster Roll 44/ 1628. Certificate of Freedom 11 Nov 1844.

The Indent of the Mellish stated James Whiteside Age 20 years. Reads. Single. Protestant. hight 5' 5". Complection ruddy much freckled. Hair Brown. Eyes Hazel . Tattoo right arm man & woman J.W. E.C. Left arm - mermaid fish & anchor.

Tried Glasgow 15 April 1828.14 years Stealing.Guilty by his own admission.

other offenses: 12 months Bathurst Goal.

The trial Transcript mentioned a brother Joseph and a sister unnamed as well as his father Joseph Whiteside.

The brother Joseph, nine years younger was also transported in 1833 on the ship Susan.

Marriage Registered in New South Wales No 287 Vol 94. Catherine Connolly a member of the Catholic Church & James Whiteside a member of the English Church. Joined in wedlock on 20 August 1844 at St Michae's Roman Catholic Church Bathurst, by Fr. MO'Reilly. Witnesses Paul Wiltshire & Mary Fitzpatrick both parties signed register.

Reel 908 Convict indent of the ship "Diamond" sailed Cork 29 Nov 1837 arrived N.S.W. 1838. Convict number 38 / 146. Catherine Connolly - single .Roman Catholic. reads. age 22. native place Co. Roscommon Ireland. House servant. Offence Stealing money 21 October 1837.Sentence 7 years. No prior convictions. height 5'3" complection, ruddy a little pock pitted and freckled. hair brown. eyes gray. nose a little cocked small scar on left side of forehead.

Certificate of freedom 21 November 1841. Catherine Connolly wife of John Wedge as per ship "Andremeda" arrived February 1830. As yet no marriage found between John Wedge and Catherine Connolly. Marriage 462 vol 90 John Welsh and Catherine Connolly. Death John Wedge 1841.

Deaths Registered in the district of Emerld Hill in the State of Victoria No 4261.6 February 1875 at 16 Palmer Street Emerald Hill County of Bourke. male James Whiteside Labourer 66 years. Dysentery 6 months.Certified by Thomas Cook Resident Surgeon Alfred Hospital Prahran 4 Feb 1875. buried Melbourne General Cemetery having resided in N.S.W. about 6 years, 1 year S.A. 24 years in Victoria.
