Hi Elizabeth,

I have discovered that Frances' mother died when she (Frances) was about 10, and it looks like her father died very soon after. It puzzles me that elder sister Sarah Ann took off to Australia so soon after, and so did Frances when there were much younger siblings, now orphaned, who would need care.

Without someone to give consent (Frances would have been a minor) to marriage - or perhaps consent by a relative was denied (I have tracked down at least one uncle living nearby) I wonder if she and Henry eloped - and that with Henry's impending death (Feb 1901) they thought they should legalise things (i.e. estate, will, etc). This is pure conjecture, but it would answer why they 'registered' their marriage.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Caroline.

Henry O'Bree was born in Hackney on 14th Nov 1827 in the east of London. Henry was reputed to have gone to sea at the age of twelve and he fought in Crimean war 1854-56. On his discharge from the merchant Service Henry married Frances Pierpoint fom a good standing family in Liverpool.

Henry and Frances sailed from Liverpool on a unassisted passage in the "Northern Bride" on March 3rd 1858, and disembarked at Geelong three months later. They travelled by bullock wagon to Muntham Station and then worked for Stephen Henty as a married couple for eighteen shillings a week. Their first born Frederick was born 1859.

In 1872 they selected land at Vectus East near Natimuk where Henry built his first home (a picture of this would of been great) He was given a contract to build a bridge over the Wimmera River near his property, always known as the O'Bree Bridge, now demolished.

With their growing family of nine boys and one girl, their next move was to Stony Crossing, N.S.W. Here Henry tried his hand at grazing, but due to adverse conditions had to abandon the idea. Henry and Frances and the younger members of the family moved to Boundary Bend in 1889. Henry bought the "Wine Shades", a saloon, then only a bark hut, rebuilt it with drop logs. It had nine rooms and lined in hessian, which was papered.

A very capable man, Henry started the first irrigation scheme at Boundary Bend and the first planting was one acre of mixed fruit trees.

Henry died as a result of a bolting coach accident on February 14th 1901, at the age of seventy three and buried was in the Geelong cemetery. His devoted wife Frances died on November 30th 1904, sixty-seven years old. Her remains lie in the Swan Hill cemetery. Their nine sons and daughter inherited from their parents, qualities of honesty and industry and many were talented in music and singing.

Subject: Henry O'B 2nd marriage

Hello all, Did any of you know that Henry O'Bree had been married before Frances? It's news to me. I have received the 1901 marriage registration in Melbourne - can send scanned copy if anyone wants it.

Some details - Henry noted as widower with first wife dying in 1856.

There are two other marriages on the certificate page - all three were married at the same place, before the same Minister and witnesses. All marriages were into the Free Christian Church. The other two were undoubtedly already married as the abodes of both partners were the same. The other partners were in their 30s (well, one partner was 26). Dates - 23, 24 (Henry and Frances) and 24 January 1901.

So are these marriages some sort of verification required for vote registration? Or was there a general round-up of enthusiasm for the Free Christian Church?

In answer to one query - yes, the certificate clearly states that parents were William Phineas [sic] and Susan (nee Smith); and William and Elizabeth (nee Wright). Henry signed; Frances made her mark.

Caroline.

Hello again,

I have been doing a bit of research and found the following in; Family Matters No.60

In the wake of Federation there was a lively debate about the effects of economic insecurity on the family. The upshot was the cautious introduction of welfare support for the elderly and the disabled, and the introduction of a “living wage”, 1901-2001 based on the amount required for a man “to lead a human life, to marry, and bring up a family” (Ryan and Conlon 1975: 50).

There may have been a requirement to be married to claim the “living wage”. This might explain the enthusiasm to be married and the only Church that would marry couples who already had children may have been the “Free Christian Church”.

And also from Elizabeth - Where is the first marriage?

First I checked Freebmd for marriages by Henry Obree from 1838 to 1858, (expecting Frances) and found there were 4 possible wives in 1849, the district Whitechapel spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex

Marriages Mar 1849 at Freebmd Names, District, Volume, Page
Ballard Elizabeth Whitechapel 2 - 431
Josephs Elizabeth Whitechapel 2 - 431
Ledwich Mary Ann Whitechapel 2 - 431
Obree Henry Whitechapel 2 - 431
Voell Mary Whitechapel 2 - 431
There is only one death to 1858 - Deaths Mar 1852
OBREE William Whitechapel 1c 259

So did the obvious and checked FamilySearch FamilySearch where I found he wed Mary Voell (who does not remarry or die as Mary Voell to 1890)

Henry Obree Spouse: MARY VOELL Marriage: 12 MAR 1849 at Saint Mary Spital Square Or Wheeler Chapel, Spitalfields, London, England
