Here is an update on the Vallender Family. (sorry it has taken so long) The first John Vallender to come to Benalla, arrived in Australia from Birmingham England. (not sure when) He was born in Churcham 1833 the son of John & Amelia Vallender. He married Emma Roper on 28th December 1858 at St Peters in Melbourne Emma came to Australia on the 18th April 1857 on board the Persia They had 5 children. William (died in infancy )John, Henry, Frank, and Annie.. The family lived in Brunwick, Geelong and Ascot Vale before they came to Benalla in the early 1880's John (1) was a butcher by trade. John married Rebecca Blackburne the daughter of Robert and Mary Jane Blackburne in 1885 and they had 9 children Frank, Margaret (Daisy) John, William, Harry, Margaret, Robert, George, and Elizabeth (Maisie). Frank, Margaret, Margaret & George all died during their childhood. John (return soldier of WW1) married Isobel Gunn, William married Rachel Varcoe, Harry married Ella Bailey and migrated to USA, Robert (my father, who was also a return soldier of WW1 & WW2) married (1) Lillian Scherell (2) Olive Nicholas. Elizabeth married a return soldier WW1 George Westle.

3. Henry Vallender never married, he owned a Draper Shop in Nunn Street Benalla

4. Annie was the first pupil teacher at Benalla East State School. She married a widower by the name of Frederick Bird, he was a Tailor and had a shop in Nunn Street Benalla

5. Frank married a widow by the name of Isobel England (nee Wood) Isobel had a son Richard by her first marriage, But Frank and her didn't have any children.

Vawdon

The Chandernagore came June 1854 with James Vawdon aged 29, and Alice Vawdon aged 22
Chandernagore is also a French settlement in India, with a small adjoining territory, situated on the right bank of the river Hugh, 20 miles above Calcutta, and now a quiet suburb of Calcutta.
From British Parliamentary Papers, 1856 XXIV [2089], 393, - 'Return of Ships and Emigrants dispatched by Public Funds to Victoria' in 1854
The ship Chandernagore of 620 new tons, departed 4 Mar 21 arrived at Melbourne June 1854 taking 109 days, Surgeon Superintendent W.W. M'Creight with 40 males and 167 females, 12 male and 26 female children under 14, total 245 souls No deaths during the voyage.

James Vawdon and Alice Pickard (later Rickards) came June 1854 on the Chandernagore as Assisted British Immigration, and lived in Geelong

Venner

In the realms of fascinating history
Thomas Venner (died 19 January 1661), a cooper who became the last leader of the Fifth monarchy men, tried unsuccessfully to overthrow Oliver Cromwell in 1657 and subsequently led a coup in London against the newly-restored government of Charles II of England. This event, known as "Venner's Rising", lasted four days (1 - 4 January 1661) before the Royal authorities captured the rebels. The rebel leadership suffered execution on 19 January 1661.

My name is Philip Volich and I'm a great grandson of John Volich. My Fathers name was John William Volich and his Father was Mitchell Volich.
Do you have any more info on Volich that is not listed on your web page?
From what I have been told my grandfather Mitchell originally settled in the goldfields of W.A. and came from the Victorian goldfields possibly Weddiburn near Bendigo.
