Hello Elizabeth,
As a descendant of Louisa VENDY formerly SWANSON (SVENNSON) nee MORGAN, I was very interested to stumble across your Vendy webpage. I descend from Marguretta Louisa SWANSON (SVENNSON) born Melbourne circa 1854/5 (d/o Otto Fredererick SVENNSON (SWANSON) and Louisa MORGAN) who married my great great grandfather John James Charles HOOKER at Greymouth, New Zealand on 25 December 1872. A witness at the wedding was Ann Maria OLSON formerly MORGAN nee POWELL, the bride's grandmother, who I understand died at Landsborough on 28 september 1897.. As far as I waas able to discover, Louisa and her first husband Otto Frederick SVENNSON had the following children:

1. Marguretta Louisa SVENNSON/SWANSON above.
2. Emmeline SVENNSON/SWANSON Born Melbourne 6 November 1856 Died prior to 1859?
3. Alfred SVENNSON/SWANSON Died Ballarat 14 November 1857 aged 4 days.
4. Frederick Richard SVENNSON/SWANSON Born Ballarat 8 January 1859 Died prior to 1915?
5. Ann Maria Ellen SVENNSON/SWANSON Died Campbells Creek St Arnaud Vic 19 October 1861 aged 3 months.

It is apparent that correspondence must have passed between my own family and the Vendys as we hold photos of the latter and a memoriam notice for Arthur Llewellyn VENDY who, I seem to recollect, died at Kalgoorlie WA in 1896.

I certainly would be delighted to hear from you regarding your Vendy research.
Best wishes,
Garry Hooker

Hans Olson wed 1854 #3477A to Anne Maria Powel Morgan

There is a death that links Morgan and Powell -
James Henry Morgan 1838 - 1866 #5639 aged 28, son of Ann Maria Powell and Henry Morgan of London
There are no marriages, or registrations of births for James Henry Morgan

Maybe our Henry Morgan 1807 - 1865 #7088 aged 57, of Shropshire

(William) Henry MORGAN,s/o William MORGAN and Maria JACKSON of Ludlow, Shropshire. William Henry MORGAN who was bap at Ludlow on 18 August 1809, was a gunsmith of Mill St., Ludlow and later of London. He apparently married Ann Maria POWELL (bap Orleton, Herefordshire 28 August 1810 and d/o Richard POWELL, innkeeper and his wife Jane CARTWRIGHT) but their marriage has not been traced.
6 Children 1. Emma Elizabeth MORGAN Bap Orelton 25 August 1833
2. James Henry MORGAN Bap Orelton 11 March 1835 Died 1866
3. Louisa MORGAN Bap Ludlow circa 1836
4. Herbert MORGAN Bap Orleton 11 August 1839
5. Alfred MORGAN Bap Stepney, London 21 August 1841
6. Catherine Mary MORGAN Bap Shadwell, London 23 September 1848, wed Ballarat Vic 18 June 1869 William Stewart DUNCAN

Henry Morgan may have come to Victoria between 1848 and 1853.
said - we earlier had found a 24 July 1865 Melbourne death (fatally run down by a tram driver) of a Henry MORGAN, gunsmith of Shropshire aged 57, the same as William Henry MORGAN, but could not identify him as ours not being able to find an Australian immigration record for him.

The Stratheden came May 1853 with Anne Morgan 40, Louisa Morgan 15, Alfred Morgan 11 and Catherine Morgan 4.
If Henry Morgan also came to Victoria, it looks like her first marriage had broken down as Anne then wed 1854 to Hans Olson

Otto Frederick Swanson 1822 - 1860 #10985 aged 38 son of Ann and Peter Swanson of Sweden, wed as Frederick Svensson 1 August 1853 #467 to Louisa Morgan and had Emeline christened at St James CofE Melb then lived at Ballarat

Otto Frederick (Frederic) Svensson was bap at Alem, Kalmar, Sweden on 1 March 1822 the son of Peter Svensson aka Sven Pehr Perhsson, a farmer, and his wife Anna Greta Andersson and he had died in Ballarat by 26 October 1860, when an inquest was held for the cot death of Anna Maria Ellen Sverison (Baby 5, in list)

From about 1857 he and his wife worked on the goldfields, he as a carpenter and she as a dressmaker, milliner etc. It was while she was a young widow at Campbells Creek, St Arnaud, Vic, that their youngest child Ann Maria Ellen SVENSSON died in her mother's shop of cot death. One of the witnesses at the subsequent inquest was a Leicestershire butcher Frederick VENDY who had arrived at Melbourne as a single man on the "Red Jacket"on 14 October 1858. It seems likely that the couple then were courting for he married the widow at the Registry Office, Dunolly, Vic on 15 April 1862. The Vendys later (about 1866) settled at Landsborough Vic where most of their family were born. He was the local butcher and she the local dressmaker. He died at Stawell Vic on 14 November 1901 and is buried at Landsborough , while she died at Landsborough on 8 August 1915 where she also is buried.

Frederick Vendy aged 25 came OCT 1858 on the Red Jacket
Mathew Vendy wed 02 MAY 1835 to Maria Tilly at Thorpe Langton, Leicester, England
IGI entry identifies her as Maria Tilley Christening: 22 Nov 1812 dau of Mary Twingler and William Tilley at Thorpe Langton, Leicester, England

Subject: Albert Edward Vendy
Regarding Albert Edward Vendy's children: he and Mary had an additional child, Eric, who is not listed. He died when he was about twelve of tetanus from treading on a chop bone in bare feet.
Also Beryl Mildred was married for most of her life to Walter Scammell, she only married Birch late in life after her first husband died. Beryl and Walter had three children, Walter, Elaine and David.
My mother was Thelma Warne Vendy. I hope it's OK to suggest these amendments. Regards

Hi Elizabeth, Noticed on your site that you have the wrong Thomas re marriage to Mary Harriet Pearson. I have thoroughly researched this Vivash family & have copies of original records including BMD's, family photos, census records etc.

Thomas Vivash was born 6 Feb 1854, Deptford. He was the eldest son of John Vivash and Margaret (nee Dillon White) of Deptford. Thomas arrived Australia circa 1877 (possibly worked his way on the 'Kent'). He was employed by the Victorian Railways.

His marriage record - Thomas Vivash, Bachelor, age 25, Labourer. Birthplace Kent, England, parents John Vivash (labourer) and Margaret Dillon, married Mary Harriet Pearson, Spinster, age 18. Birthplace St. Kilda (Vic.), parents John Pearson (cook) and Margaret Fitzgerald, on the 7th July 1880 by dispensation according to the rite of the Catholic Church at Emerald Hill, ( Vic.) They were living 1883 at 11 Fowler's Buildings, Grant Street, Emerald Hill before moving to St. Vincent street-west in 1884.

Thomas died from Typhoid Fever after a duration of illness of five weeks on the 19th April 1896. The week before his death he made out his Will.

"This is the last Will and Testament of me THOMAS VIVASH of No.84 St. Vincent Street, South Melbourne, Railway Employee. After payment of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses I give devise and bequeath unto my dear wife MARY HARRIET VIVASH the whole of the real and personal estate which I am possessed of at the time of my death and I appoint my said wife the sole Executrix of this my Will. Dated this 12th day of April 1896 - (signed) Thomas Vivash - Signed by the said Testator Thomas Vivash as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us present at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as attesting witnesses - John Nolan, 408 Collins St., Melbourne, Solicitor - M. Moynihan, St. Vincent St. S.M".

He married 7 July 1880 to Mary Harriet Pearson, daughter of John Pearson & Margaret Fitzgerald. Mary died 1901 Lilydale.
