Don
Adrian de Moxica |
|
'1492: |
|
The
Conquest of Paradise'
One of Michael Wincott's
most popular characters, Don Adrian de Moxica is a Spanish aristocrat,
full of arrogance and pride, the epitome of Spanish nobility at the time.
He is tempted by the promise of gold in the New World and accompanies
Christopher Columbus (Gerard Depardieu) on his second voyage over
the seas. When things don't go according to plan, however, Moxica becomes
restless and creates trouble, inciting many of the others to rebellion
that leads to a final confrontation between himself and Columbus. |

At a banquet held in honour of
Christopher Columbus' return from his voyage
to the New World, Don Adrian de Moxica tries
out the Indian vice of smoking tobacco and is no more impressed than he
is with Columbus. |
|
|
Don Adrian is incensed at the slaughter of his
people and vows to avenge them and 'wash this in blood'.
Columbus (Gerard Depardieu) dissuades Moxica reminding him who he is
talking to, and therefore setting the beginning of a deep enmity. |
Don Adrian stands in the mist
listening as Columbus parleys with the chief of the natives.
Disbelieving the chief Moxica tells Columbus 'the monkey is lying'.
Columbus suspects that Moxica's words are true, but for the sake of
peace chooses to take the Chief at his word. |
|
|
'My horse does no work'. Moxica is offended when Columbus states that
Adrian's beautiful black horse be put to work in helping to raise the
church bell. Moxica complies, but the look of contempt and hatred in his
eyes betrays his feelings for Columbus.
|
Relaxing with Guevara (Arnold
Vosloo), Moxica
looks at a native girl and tells his friend that he can have her if he wants
her. Moxica then toasts Columbus. 'To the Governor...
of the mosquitoes'. |
|
|
Forced to work, Don Adrian has
his own ways of dealing with natives who do not produce gold. Moxica
instructs the man to put his hand on the table, then draws his sword and
brings it down on the unfortunate man's wrist, severing his hand. |
Satisfied with his vicious deed,
Moxica wipes the blood off the blade of his sword, while the wounded man
screams in agony, and the horrified natives rush to help him. |
|
|
Don Adrian is found guilty at his
trial. He calmly and scathingly tells Columbus that he and his brothers have failed and have
achieved nothing in the four years they have been there. His words cut
deep as Columbus fears the truth in them. |
Imprisoned for his crime, Moxica
looks up as his allies come to free him and put their mutinous plans
into action. He begins by setting fire to Columbus' quarters. |
|
|
Trapped on the clifftop, Moxica
prepares for his final moments. He tells Columbus that his bastard
children will never inherit their father's title.
'We, we are everything, we are immortal'.
