The First Day of Class, 2006
will be Thursday, August 24th. We will go over our books, and what is expected in class. Because 3/5 of our work will be completed outside the classroom, you need to know how to schedule your time, and make the most of your resources. Bring a notebook, paper, pen/pencil . If you don't have a good calculator (graphing for Geometry and up, Statistical for F. S. & T.) get one soon! I recommend the TI-83 Plus. The Books
We will be using the UCSMP texts for these classes. (University of Chicago School Math Project). Cllick on the "Q & A for UCSMP Books" link to the right to learn more about these tests.
PROS:
* Chapter format, with review each day.
* Builds new concepts from previously learned material.
* Applies each concept to Real World examples of use.
* Covers SAT material.
CONS:
* Very expensive.
* Algebra doesn't spend much time practicing Factoring.

My name is Petrina Maher. I graduated from Covenant College in 1989 with an Interdisciplinary BA in Music, Math, and Philosophy. When my first child, Megan, turned 5, we began to home school. As she entered 7th grade, we had the opportunity to go to Trinity Christian School where I taught mathematics to grades 7 through 11. Now that we have a new toddler, we are again home schooling. This gives me the opportunity to help other home educators who are uncomfortable teaching higher math.
